Years ago the behr was highly recommended. Seems now not so much. Anyone have any comments on recent quality? Paticularly interior

I dont really see why sherwin williams is such a leader.

I’ll say this. I’ve bought probably 7-8 gallons of behr the last two years and it’s no where near as good as it once was. I even bought the “best” they offer and it still isn’t anywhere near what it was years ago.

I used it on the outside of my house in 2007 and it looks like crap. Guess I should have repainted before now. I used it both times I painted the inside. It's not what it used to be ... but neither is anything else. Kinda expecting an industry wide issue.

Pass the gravy.

I've tried Behr and found nothing goes on with a brush quite like Kelly Moore or Sherwin Williams. The right paint makes cutting in trim so much easier. That and the store staff at KM or SW are far more knowledgeable

20 years ago I was a subcontractor with Home Depot to do all their painting in my area of Northern Colorado. My buddy bought the contract for like 5k and when business is slow during the winter months up north for construction related fields you look for ways to stay busy. The stipulation was that we had to buy Behr paint and we had to pay full retail for it to boot. I was one of the highest paid paint contractors around because I was very fast and very good at what I did, but after just a few jobs with that garbage paint I had to quit, Behr paint was the worst paint I had ever used. They tried to make paint thick so home owners could get by with one coat because they know the average consumer does not like to paint but it made for material that was hard to brush on, had no vehicle (coverage basically) and would sag after you walked away. It was the kind of paint that would make you crazy because no matter how much experience you had, it was not going to give you a good look or satisfying finish regardless of what you did. A little long winded response but just so folks know what they are getting into. The paint is not good and it never has been. The fake #1 rating is bought and paid for by Behr. Just like if you on line search for the top 10 whatever, you get the top products, all which take you to the Amazon sight, it is their top ten bought and paid for advertising is all, their top 10 money makers. Much deception and out and out lies in the advertising world.

IMO behr has always been mediocre. I did use Behr premium plus paint with good results but the were other brands out there that I liked better, Valspar was one of them

We have used Magnolia Home paints on a few walls here in the house. We have only had it for about 3 years now but so far nothing to be concerned about. I believe the only place to get it is at Ace. The only thing I don't know about its durability because they are in areas where my daughter doesn't touch, so I don't know about having to scrub kid "stuff" off.

SW and PPG are going to have the best quality and longest lasting but cost a lot more than the big box stuff.

Sherwin Williams Super Paint...great paint and all I'll use at this point. I started a new sentence because Behr should never be used in the same sentence. Zero comparison.

Good luck.

Understand that I am not a mega user of paint, painting no rooms or houses, but just making and giving away scores of wooden stools. Each kid or recipient gets to pick their color. That means, on occasion, I’ll have to go buy a new color that I don’t have. It seems to be a roll of the dice as to whether or not I get a decent paint - which means I won’t have to paint the stool 3 or 4 times to get full coverage. The most recent purchase was a Baby Blue, and I wanted a good paint that would give great coverage and look good in 2 coats. I bought a quart of Behr’s best latex, and paid a lot of money for one stinking quart, but the paint went on wonderfully. I also get good results with Valspar’s bright red. And I have a great purple and great pink, but can’t remember the brand name. Two days ago I threw away all the crappy paint, so I can’t read off the list of paints that were no good.

Also, over the last few years, I have used Behr’s outdoor paint/stain on picnic tables and outdoor furniture for our place, and I made 10 or 12 benches for the high school tennis courts (there was no place to sit) and used the Behr on all of them. I’ll get you the name of the specific paint if you want me to. Nothing I have ever bought has held up for more than 2 years. The picnic table paint job with the Behr has lasted at least 5 years and still looks great. I bought another gallon of it.

So maybe Behr paint isn’t working for your specific application, but I’m real happy with it, even though it’s expensive.

Valspar was pretty good about 15 years ago. We used it on the interiors of the lake house and 4 properties we bought...and no need to repaint since. However, I bought some when we were remodeling this house, yeah, I bought SW instead. Just go get Sherwin Wiliams. We used it on the exterior of the other properties and it was great then, and great now. Also, if you are a member of the Texas Farm Bureau, you get a 30% discount off retail prices.

Blanked,
I'm not an expert, but I used to make and sell "binders" to all the paint manufacturers. Specifically as it relates to interior paints, most retailers who are focused on the DIY (Home Depot/Lowes) market have shifted to "low VOC" paints because the typical DIY customer wants to buy a product that is more environmentally friendly and does not leave Volatile Organic Compounds inside their home which takes quite a while to dissipate (hence the strong smell). There are inherent limitations in the engineering of a Low VOC paint formulation.

Ben Moore, Sherwin Williams and others cater primarily to the contractor industry. They care about performance more than they care about odor/environment. As such, their paints are engineered to maximize performance of the coating.

hope that helps..

Lou

Sherwin Williams Emerald is some of the best paint you can buy. Behr is junk. 99% of our painters use Sherwin Williams exclusively. Superpaint and pro Mar 200 are the two I see on every job.
