Bought a Kimber Hunter 30-06 for elk, and I have a bunch of Federal Fusion 150gr that I’ve used really successfully on big bodied south Texas deer. I just put in for an Elk cow tag in the fall, and I’m wondering if you think that’s enough round to successfully take an elk cow. I would definitely keep shots within 3-400 yards.

Keep shots inside that distance and where they belong on cow I doubt there will be any problem. I know people that hunt elk very successfully with less. 180gr cup and core bullets have been killing elk for years.

I agree. Enough bullet if you do your job.

That’s what I’m thinking too. Behind the shoulder right in the V and it should do its job.

Will work just fine on a cow elk.

Good luck on your hunt

Just make sure your gun is well sighted, keep within a descent distance, and your golden up

Plenty of bullet for a cow elk. I've used the Fusion in .223, .243, and 7-08 and been pleased with bullet perfomance.

Yep, I’ve shot several elk with a 130 grain Hornadys Interlock in .270. You’ll be fine as long as shot placement is on point.

I used to hunt elk with a .30-06. Shot my first 3 bulls with that caliber, but I always used 180 grain Nosler partitions. One took 3 shots to finally expire though. I would think 150 grain Fusion would be sufficient on cows within your range.

One thing with elk, a good shot in the vitals and they expire pretty quick. Place that first shot wrong and they can go a long way and soak up more bullets and keep going. Have helped track a few. Others shot through the lungs tjat just stood there until the wobbles hit and they went down.

Have also killed elk with 270 and 130 grain Hornadys interlock. Let the air out and they don't go far.

I admit I am old school but have been on many elk hunts - always used 180 grain - I would rather overkill than have to track them - just me

You can't fix stupid

I’ve never shot an elk so don’t take my word for it. Randy Newburgh has a few videos on YouTube, he seems pretty exceptionally experienced and recommends that stuff like 308 7mm08 etc is perfectly fine, don’t see why a 30-06 wouldn’t be more than fine.

If you can get the right shot and then shoot it, yes.

You should be just fine on a cow elk with 150 grs.
I've never taken an elk with anything larger than a 168 gr bullet and bonded bullets are my preference.
If you come across some 165-180 grs bullets though give them a shot to so to speak.
Just avoid shoulder shots, but on a cow you should be fine even then, it will mess up some good meat.

Hope you have a nice hunt and get a fat and tender cow.
