Hi All,

Looking to gain any helpful insights on turkey hunting this spring in eastern counties. I’ve been scouting some areas in Fannin county, specifically WMA areas in Caddo and was wanting to get out to Bob Mayse in time.

For Caddo in specific, some good terrain in spots but mostly thickets and briar areas in heavily forested areas. I’m talking with some of the TPWD bios and researching online forums and TPWD sites, some show low harvest numbers after freeze last year with some good potential this year.

Ultimately just wanting to open this thread for open discussion on any aspect of turkey hunting in Caddo.

Good Hunting!

Have only ever heard one vocal tom, and the one vehicle there before me got claim. He didn't get it either. Ran into a silent bird once and have heard some hens. I will say this, be prepared to stand your ground with some hogs. I don't think I have been there yet without running into them. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you out there.

Wow, tough going; the bio said they did a controlled burn for all of Caddo last year but said it didn’t take in some areas so it created pockets of burned locations; likely deeper beyond where anyone else wants to go. I’d like to avoid a lease or day hunt but who knows.

Appreciate the insight! Public is tough out here! I’m hoping things perk up in a few weeks as we get closer to season!

Ever explored a public area in north zone for spring?

Best of luck! See ya out there

I have hunted corp land in Cooke County last 3 years. Had a tom shock gobble to a distant shot. Called to him and never got a response. Went to leave and he was right there as I started my hike out. Other than that, nothing. I am new to turkey hunting, but I'm not just calling from the road. I'm doing my homework and putting in miles of hiking these public access places. I'm successful on private, so I'm guessing there aren't a lot of birds at these spots or they are just so highly pressure that they don't respond well to calling.
