you buy yourself a present before you get married? Really thinking about getting a 6.5 Grendel upper before the wedding in month, just weighing the pros and cons. I'd probably get a PSA 20" as another hog hunting option.

Only if you’re afraid you won’t be allowed to later. Best to set the precedent now.

I just got married a few weeks ago and made it very clear beforehand that I am still going to be the same man that I was before I got married and that includes a 5k a month gun habit. Fortunately my wife LOVES guns. The only time I will bend is when it affects mutual goals.

^^Yup

When my wife was my girlfriend she said "you have a lot of guns and a lot of tools." I said there are worse places to put your money. You can always get back almost what you paid for guns and tools."

I don't know about a present but I will give you some advice for a long happy marriage. My wife and I go out for a romantic dinner twice a week. She goes on Tuesday, I go on Thursday. (sorry but I need a hundred post so I can sell some stuff).

To the OP if you think you need to justify an extra upper as a wedding gift you might want to watch out.

My wife and I have been married since ‘06 and we have separated checking accounts and savings accounts. She had her bills and I pay mine with percentages calculated by our salaries.

We’ve have never one time fought about money, ever.

I can go blow $5k on a custom gun and she doesn’t give a [censored].

She can go blow $150 on getting her nails done and I don’t give a [censored].

It just works.

So back to your original question. Yes get it now. (6.8spc is better hog hunting option IMO). As well as all the other toys you can afford. Girlfriends that are cool about your gun collecting habits have a nasty way of turning in wife’s that would rather see you do adult things like pay the mortgage and save for retirement.

Some months it is a whole lot more. That is the advantage of being self-employed and doing a bunch of cash jobs.

Buy it whenever. We're coming up on 25 years this May and she doesn't work so I don't have your problem.

Pass the gravy.

For our 25th I booked the same hotel and suite we had on our honeymoon. The only difference is I was the one that hid in the bathroom and cried.

Thanks for all the tips gents, always good to hear advice. Thankfully she's always been very supportive of my firearms purchases, even some of the less practical milsurps and other range toys as well as guitars and whatnot too. I have been pondering 6.8 as well, guess I need to delve a little deeper into comparison.

Don't screw up a perfectly good relationship by getting married.

I never understood the separate account thing. Just seems like it starts the whole deal off on the wrong foot….whats mine is mine, whats yours is yours, and we have some stuff we have together. I went into marriage with a ton in assets, zero debt and my wife brought zero assets and 6yrs of private school debt. Ive always made 2x the salary she does but I make sure she drives a nicer vehicle than I do and I keep her happy. Heck, i did the opposite of what you’re asking, I bought her a big gift she’d always dreamed right before we got married. Its just my take on it. I give the courtesy of heads up if Im gonna buy something and she does the same for me. Regardless the joint vs separate account, start things out the right way with your wife and it’ll pay off. My dad told me, start things the right way or dont start them at all.

I still tell this to my wife - I can get back 5x the money for a tool that cost $300 than she can from 5 pairs of shoes that cost $300.

She's learned to just leave it alone now.

I did buy a gun safe a week or so before we got married. My wife still holds it over my head every now and again. Honestly, she's very reasonable with purchases, but I've also mellowed out a bit on spending over the years, realizing that what's the point in working hard if you don't ever get to enjoy the fruits of the labor. Spending smartly just becomes more important than not spending at all. We'll hit 15 years this October

I know what you are saying, I did something similar, I pay "all" of the bills. She pays for her personal expenses, groceries and when the kids were at home their expenses. In 43 years of marriage, we have never had one fight about money,

I like the way the OP thinks. I don't get the separate checking account stuff. Haven't signed a check since, I think 2013 when we bought her last vehicle. When I need $, I tell Wifeypoo and she gives it to me.
