Greetings, all. I posted a couple months ago about advice on Africa. I’ve booked a trip to Namibia for plains game in June and I’m about to pull the trigger on flights. I thought I’d once again consult the brain trust here and see who had recommendations/experience to share. Thanks again

Be sure to buy some biltong at the airport in Windhoek.

Use a travel agent specializing in African Travel.....Travel With Guns is my rec
Avoid J'Burg if at all possible.
If you must overnight there, use a meet and greet service, as well as a SAPS service if you're taking your own gun.
Sample a Windhoek Lager
Tafel Lager is great too.
Don't miss the opportunity to hunt, and eat, a mountain zebra.

Assume 2022… may want to watch airfare for a week or two but I wouldn’t wait too long. Only bad thing is if you’re going this year you didn’t leave yourself long to book your air. Rates change hourly and sometimes wildly. The flight I’m booked on I’ve seen as low as $3,250 and as high as $14,000 (first class United).

I have done this trip to Windhoke several times. I would recommend flying Qatar airlines out of Dallas or Houston. You will fly directly into Doha, Qatar. Make sure you get the lounge at the airport, coming and going if your flights are there for more than 2 hours. It will cost around $50 and you get all you can eat meals, beverages, loungers and quiet rooms with computer access. You will want to check on upgrading to first class on your next leg from Doha to Windhoke because it will not be a full flight and you can get a good deal on the upgrade. Repeat and rinse on your way back. Good luck and I hope you have a great trip.

Thanks for the input. I do have a refundable ticket reserved as the prices took a steep dive this week, but I’d still like the chance to go through a travel agent. I’m not taking a rifle on this trip, so that will simplify logistics. I did reach out to Travel Express, one of the premier Africa hunting agencies, but one of the partners passed away and they are a ways out on new bookings.

As for hunting, I’ve got kudu, gemsbok, hartebeest, springbok, and mountain zebra in the package. My PH has his own microbrewery, so I’m sure a local lager is in my future.

Mountain Zebra just requires a CITES permit to import to the US

When I went, I wanted the cheapest price that I could find. For some reason, I was able to get the best price by booking one round trip ticket to Paris on Air France, and then a separate round trip ticket from Paris to Windhoek on Air France. We landed in Paris at first light, spent the day hanging out in Paris, then flew out that night. We did the same on the return trip. We where able to check our baggage through to Windhoek, so we just walked out of the airport when we landed and got a taxi into the city.

I brought my rifle on that hunt and didn't have any issues. Friends did the same thing the following year and Air France lost their rifles for a week. They lost a day of hunting to go back to the airport to pick them up. Since then, I've been to New Zealand and South Africa, and I borrowed rifles on those two trips. It's a lot nicer to travel there and back without dealing with rifles. In both places the outfitter had very high quality rifles with Zeiss scopes that where sighted in, and ready to go. I took two shots at the range and I was ready to hunt!!!
