Hi everyone! I just joined this board to get some local perspective. I live in Wisconsin and am an avid whitetail hunter. I'd like to hunt some hogs in Texas. I really want to avoid the ranches where you sit and shoot hogs as they come up to a bait station. I also want to avoid fenced-in ranches that release hogs for you. I've read there are tons of these "fake" hog hunts and to watch out for them. I'm not really on a budget, but just want to have fun on an authentic hunt. I'd also like to use my own rifles.

Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

What do you want to do walk around until you see one? I don’t sell hunts but on my ranch the hogs come to the deer feeders. You can sit and wait for them at the feeder, sit and wait for them at the water hole, or sit along the trails that lead to these and wait for them. Other than that you can wander around aimlessly and hope you stumble upon one but the best way to hunt them is to sit and wait for them at someplace they are going.

Gotta agree with Sewer Rat. I'm a land owner who is butt deep in hogs. Hell, we all are. Walking through the woods trying to sneak up on a bunch of hogs would be a disappointment.

Check out the outfitter's section of this forum. You should find a hunt there.

Speed the biggest hurdle you'll find is the fact that hogs are smart and landowners want hogs shot, not just folks walking around moving them off the property for a short time.
Still hunting can work well, as does spot and stalk, but usually you get one shot that way. Hunting feed sources and rooting areas usually leads to multiple shots.
Also stand hunting is the predominant hunting method in Texas, you're just going to find most landowners want you in a stand for safety purposes and what they see as a better chance at a take.

When we hunt the family place , spot and stalk and still hunting is what we do , but we know the property very well and the travel routes hogs use. Sometimes sitting a feeder is more productive, but watch the travel routes to said feeder too.
The hunt you're looking for is out there but may be harder to find, check "rate the day lease" also on Texas Bowhunter as well as here then ask some questions on the outfitters. Big hogs all over and personally when talking with outfitters I would tell them we / I want to shoot any hog, sows and piglets included not just big boars.

Look up Dry Creek Outfitters. However, once the wheat gets going it becomes harder to hunt. January and February are my favorite months to stalk sounders.

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea

Welcome.
On my ranch in Leon county I have all my feeders fenced with hog panels to keep the hogs out.
We have lots of hogs but they are mostly nocturnal.
We kill one every now and then in the daytime.
Without dogs hunting them is hard.

The guide I go with now is typically a night hunt with thermals so you will need to get there early enough to site in your gun with his thermal. If you want he uses AR's in 7.62 X 39 and last time I went a month or 2 ago we used super hogster thermals. I dont mind using his gun because my 6.8SPC is $2 a round and I may fire off 20 to 50 rounds or more. It adds up.

I got there early so I could do some walk and stalk since I enjoy that type of hunting. I didnt see anything but that is hunting. I met him back at his place at about dark and we BS d for about an hour and got in the truck and drove from place to place in the area that he has permission to hunt and we whacked hogs at almost every spot. We basically drove the truck within 30 to 100 yards of them got out and hammered em. It was a blast. Im going back next friday also and this time I will sit in a stand till after dark then we will go get in the truck and go place to place till about midnight then come home. Not bad for 350 plus tip.

I live in the clear lake area and it is 1.5 hours to his place in sargent from my house. Let me know if you want his info
