So I booked a spring Turkey hunt for my girlfriend through a guy I work with. She’s pretty excited and wants to use her bow. I’m neither a bow hunter or a turkey hunter and she’s never shot a turkey, so looking for some info on what kind of broad heads to use for best results? Right now she’s using a three sided fixed blade broad head for deer (G5’s maybe?), will these be okay or is there a better options out there?

Those will work if sharp and put in the right spot. Turkey vitals are a tennis ball sized kill shot. Other than that only a good spine hit puts them down hard. Hunting out of a blind will help her immensely. We hunt out of our Krivoman deer blinds. Shots are right around the feeders, meaning close, and the turkey never see you in the blind as long as you wear dark colors. I've killed mine with recurve bows so close it the objective.

The fellas at my local archery shop recommended a mechanical broadhead for birds since, to passthru's point, the vitals are pretty small. If a fixed broadhead zips through a wing, the bird might have enough gusto to get away. I haven't used so I can't say one way or the other, usually shoot broadheads myself. Might be worth a chat at your local shop and see what folks recommend there as well.

If you want a 7-10 yd shot, place the decoy at that distance. Like passthru stated, they won’t see you if you stay quiet in the shadows. I use 2” mechanicals.

I've shot a pile of birds with archery equipment. I love the grim reaper whitetail extreme for turkey. Def use a blind with as many windows closed as possible to allow some movement. I put decoy inside 15yds and let them work between me and the decoy for shot, closer the better.

I have only killed one turkey with a bow, also only tried to kill one turkey with a bow. I used a 100 grain Toxic trocar styled broadhead, that bird was DRT.

any big mechanical will work.....A Wasp Jackhammer or Rocket Sidewinder is perfect. They make Turkey Specific mechanicals but I have not found a need for them.


I've killed several turkeys with a bow.....get in a pop-up and don't shoot them while they are strutting is my advice.

One exception to shooting one while strutting with a bow is if they are facing straight away from you. They cannot see you draw/move if the tail is in the way and on a straight away shot the round hole is a bulls eye for hitting the vitals, though it does make for a messy cleaning job.
