Got a new lab pup at Christmas and have been feeding Orijen dog food. It’s pretty pricey. Anyone using it? Is it worth it?

Thanks

To add….

Bad story that ended “better”. Lost our 11 year old black lab back in August. Shortly after found out her litter mate was the sire of another litter due around Christmas. Probably sooner than we expected, but we picked out another black lab who is her “niece”.

Is it grain free?

Grain free diets have been linked to major heart problems in dogs.

If you want to feed a really high quality food I believe Dr. Tim's is the best in the market. Go with Pursuit or Kinesis

For little cheaper route but still really good foods go with Victor, Pro Plan Sport, Eukanuba or Loyall Chicken and Rice.

A 25lb bag is $120 eek2

Avoid grain free stuff. It causes a myriad of health problems - namely heart failure in young dogs.

Stick with the brands that have decades of good science behind them - Purina (Pro Plan), Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Victor, Hills, etc.

Wife works (and has worked) in the vet medical field for 10+ years - any problems that are related to food - 99 times out of 100 it's grain free, raw, or holistic type of food. Very rarely if ever is it the brands named above...heck they even see very few issues with "cheap" dog foods....always the expensive stuff that people get conned into buying "thinking" they're doing right by their dog feeding something good. These companies do a good job tricking people, sadly.

Personally we feed Eukanuba...and even it has gotten expensive at $75 for 30lb (large breed senior).

Cute pup!

We used to feed it to our boxer and the first Britney. It was fine for both of them for quite a while. At one point they started making it in a new plant and the Brittany had problems with it. We switched at that point. I haven’t used it in probably six years.

I’ve had a lot of dogs. I never had one have any kind of problem with whatever I fed them. I have noticed dogs live and hunt a lot longer on the quality food today than they did back in the Ol’ Roy days.

I’ve been feeding Diamond Natural Performance the last 6-7 years. It doesn’t take much to keep my mutts healthy and doesn’t break the bank.

I feed pro plan large breed puppy to my pup and she'll be on pro plan when she's an adult.

There are a million brands out there now. Lots of hate online for the purinas and other big brands. But the big brands are the ones who employ nutritionists and actually do feeding trials. Look for brands that meet AAFCO standards.

and avoid grain free. Grain free diets are dangerous in addition to being the greatest hoax ever pull over on pet owners.
