With the proliferation of large handgun calibers in the past 30-40 years, I wonder how large a six shot revolver would be in 30-06. Maybe put a 8 or 10 inch barrel. Do you think that it would be too cumbersome? Would a super redhawk frame handle the pressure?

I bet a Magnum Research BFR could do it. But hey what do I know

I can’t imagine how it would be any faster than a .308 with an 8-10” barrel. That would save you a lot of cylinder length.

That’s a nice looking revolver hetman. I bet it has a fair amount of recoil

I've kinda always wanted a BFR in 45/70. But I shot my friend's 460 s&w magnum this past weekend, and the damn thing was so heavy and cumbersome that it was hard to hold steady. Also looked through a pistol scope for the first time, and was thoroughly unimpressed.

Heck, I sold my 4" 44 mag because I really could not shoot full loads effectively after about 10-15 rounds. The upper limit for shooting more than about 25 rounds is.357 magnum now. I can't imagine the flinch that I would develop by shooting a box of ammo through anything in the BFR series.

Handguns of that size you have to shoot from a rest to obtain any accuracy at anything other than close distances. This goes for Contender and Encore handguns as well. But they are soo much fun to shoot benched and scoped at 100 yards with your handloads. Here’s my Encore handgun in 6mm BR. [Linked Image]
And my Freedom Arms 44 Magnum. It’s heft and size makes shooting pleasurable. [Linked Image]

I've shot a 270 out of a Thompson. It was a hard recoil but with the design of the gun and grip it was very manageable. Buddy of mine has a 500 smith with the 3.5" barrel or maybe a 4"? It not fun to shoot at all. Another buddy has a Ruger in 460 that not very fun to shoot either. Overall weight of the gun and the grip design helps with the recoil. I bet a Thompson in 30-06 wouldn't be that bad compared to others.

I run a red dot on my 460, as I too found pistol scopes to be a let down in optics despite the price. My pistol ate up 3 scout style scopes, which led me to red dots.

I can’t imagine what the recoil would be like. I have 2 06’s and one is a beast too shoot, pre-64 Featherweight with a steel butt plate.

I had a savage striker in 308, that’s enough silliness for anyone in all honesty.
They are fun, especially to hand to someone and say shoot that and tell me what you think..

The most herendous one I ever had was a titanium 357 mag.. totally brutal one of my biggest, strongest, Manleyest friends shot one shot and set the gun down and said did that thing just blow up? Do I still have my fingers?

I laughed at that for weeks..

Not necessarily the caliber as much as the platform but rifle rounds in pistols especially one with enough barrel to make good use of powder can be monsters.

There are a few .375 H&H pistols around for the adventurous shooter. I don’t enjoy recoil that much, so I’ll take a pass. My .44 Mag Encore pistol or my .50 Cal CVA Optima muzzleloader pistol are about all I want. The ML pistol with 100 grains of powder and a 250 grain bullet are about the limit of what I want to shoot handgun-wise for more than a shot or two.

OP: I don’t know of anyone making a 30-06, but I agree with the statement about a 308 if you decide to pursue it.

I had a 15” encore 45-70 pistol for awhile. Recoil was not bad even with Marlin loads. I also had a 7-08 barrel that was quite pleasant to shoot. The worst recoiling pistol I’ve been behind was a TC contender with a 10” thin, octagon barrel in 44 mag. Extremely lightweight, and the grip did nothing but send the gun straight back to you. I’ve shot a plethora of 357s, 44s, 45s with ruger loads, 454 casull, 475 linebaugh etc… nothing hurt like that 44.

Firearm design has (in my opinion) at LEAST 50% to do with felt recoil to the shooter.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I have an all stainless decently heavy small frame snub nose revolver in 357mag and feel the same way. It was my stepdads get-off me gun while at the PD. It’s pretty damn unpleasant to shoot

I’d have to pass on the ‘06. Not a big fan of heavy recoil in pistols in general and bet that one is real snappy

Shot Big Pig's 460 the other night. Biggest pistola I've ever shot (was fun), but kicked less than a 44 mag with a 4" barrel.

That muzzle break is pretty effective. I took it off and shot it, it was interesting.
