I have used feeder pens around deer feeders for years and seldom have issues with cows getting inside. All my pens have a couple of low spots for fawn access and I have tried to follow AgriLife Extensions recommendations on their construction. I recently put a pen up around a feeder on some family land in East Texas where we lease the land to a cattleman to run his cows. They didn't bother it until I filled the protein feeder up a couple of weeks ago with some nice expensive AntlerMax. Needless to say they got inside and wrecked everything inside and then busted out of the pen leaving panels scattered all over the ground. My fawn crossings were obviously too low for them. Has anyone had issues with cows jumping the 50" panels? Thanks in advance.

If you don’t have cows is there any reason to include the protein feeder in the pen?

I have a spinner corn feeder and a free choice protein feeder and I bought 12 panels to build a fence around them. Primary objective is to get rid of the hogs. The hogs can’t reach the protein so would it be best to just center the pen on the corn feeder and set the protein feeder outside the pen ?

I have about 15 acres around my house fenced with 50” panels and have had as many as twenty cows in there and have never had one jump it. Theoretically they could but it is pretty unlikely they would.

These are 48 inch panels and clearing them is typically effortless. Seens it with my own eyes.

If they do it once, they'll keep doing it. If one does it, she'll coach or tease the others 'til they can. Once they taste & know something they want is in there the best way to keep them out is with a trailer. My experience - YMMV

Some hogs can reach protein tubes, of course it varies by feeder brand, and the ones that can't reach will keep deer run off to eat what is on the ground. I would recommend putting the protein feeder inside the pen as well as long as you have 12 panels or more there should be room for both.

Once they get in the biggest problem is getting out.

Most of the time the issue is the pen being to small. Once they figure out what is inside the pen then no matter how large the pen is or how tall the fence is they will keep getting into the pen.

I know, I know - jinxing myself here. Our electrical set ups now in place some for two and some for four weeks. No cow photos, yet. Fingers crossed. Deer are demolishing the cottonseed and always at the protein tubes.

Just for you Hud...just for you.... grin We've all had an issue or two with cattle and feeder pens. This pen had no protein, no minerals, no deer blocks, etc and the bull never touched the corn on the ground.

if they want in (or out) bad enough, a fence / pen doesn't do anything but maybe slow them down on the first few tries.

My dad had a Santa Gertrudis bull that would jump good 50" tall fence with barb wire on top anytime the neighbors cows were in heat ... Neighbor would call dad after a few days / week to come get him. Neighbor got lots of free calves from that jumping beast.

I’ve had angus for years and never had a problem with a tight fence, with the T post not spaced too far apart. Any fence can be bent with two cows fighting, not knowing what they are doing, then they gain access to you feeder.

Odds are that one animal attempted to jump the fence and failed to clear it. The damaged panel started a parade that eventually destroyed the pen and had lunch on your protein. As a rancher, my solution to a jumper is a road trip but not an option since they are not your cattle. One other thing to consider is the conditions on your place. A lot of us are in a severe drought and if food is short, a cow will tear up a crowbar to get to protein of any type.

One of the six pens has been compromised. Five out of six still intact. Frankly, I will take that. No time when I saw it, but will get back down there to reinforce with extra T posts and string new wire at the top. Never say die.
