I'm looking for a straight wall cartridge lever action with a pistol grip... a Marlin 1895 (#70478) is my top pick. BUT the newly Ruger-produced version is 1) seemingly impossible to get unless shelling out double (at the low end) the MSRP and is 2) only chambered in 45-70 which is more than what I need. Henry's Big Boy X is available in 45 Colt, 357 Mag, 44 Mag. Relative to the Marlin it's awful looking. Uberti's 1873 is available in the same chamberings as the Henry and isn't as ugly. I'd like to stay under about $1500. What other options are there?

Thanks.

Post a “want to buy” in the firearms section. Just copy/paste your post here. Lots of people on the forum have these rifles and typically won’t gouge you.

You never know who’s willing to give one up. Good luck

There's an 1895g on gunbroker right now with only 1 day of bidding left. 45/70 can easily be loaded up or down to fit your needs.

That's on my mind. Maybe I'm going to start loading a new cartridge.

From the "want" thread.

AR-15 in .350 Legend is a straight wall. Part of the reason it was created. One in a bolt action would be cool!

Intriguing, I'll look into that.

The possible purchase I texted you about last eve didn't pan out.

== Edit ==
Henry has a 350 Legend break action. Different, I like that. And it's dirt cheap.

Yes, I'm aware of Big Horn and agree they are fine. The $3050 base price doesn't fit with the $1500 price I set. This is something with which I will realistically shoot 100 rounds at a target a year and maybe one deer a year. It might even get banged around by family and friends.

I appreciate your eye for luxury items though.

I missed your $1500 limit. For a production rifle that’s not a pistol caliber, I kind of like the 444marlin, most likely in a Marlin.

Since the move to a new plant and new machinery after not building rifles for over a year, the current Rossi R92 is a good rifle for $650 or so. I think they are making mostly .45 Colts right now and they may all be stainless but I expect more to come soon. I know many want to stay US built and I understand that but from a quality standpoint I have not heard anything negative about the new rifles.

Pass the gravy.

Look at the older JM stamped Marlins. They aren't getting ridiculous prices.

I have two Winchester 1892’s in 45 Colt. Both are NIB. One is the 16” SRC, the other is the 20” Octagonal barrel.

I too prefer the 1892. The Winchester MSRP is around $1200 and out of stock.

Pass the gravy.

A friend talked me into ordering a Marlin Cowboy Limited before they were made. 45 colt, octagon barrel and great feel. I load from a 200gr excited to a 300 gr flatnose. It is as near a one hole gun as I have ever owned. A buckhorn rear site is all the more I have done to it. Killed everything I ever pulled the trigger on. Boys will fight over it when I am gone.

An old shotgun I recently picked up. Winchester Model 1887. They were made in 12 and 10 gauge. Holds five in the tube and one in the chamber. This one was made in early 1888 based on sn. It’s a fun little gun to shoot. I got it for shooting all black powder guns at Dkershens charity clay shoot next month. Took it out weekend before last and let some friends shoot it. I think they made about 60k between 1887-1899. It was replace by the Model 1901 only in 10 gauge for smokeless powders and the 1897 pump.

There is a company making a modern version for cowboy action shooting that shoots smokeless powder.

They were popular with lawmen, outlaws, and cowboys for having 6 shots vs. two in the old SxS's they replaced. Here are a couple old pictures with them. Man on the left has one and the man on the right looks like one based on the receiver. Man in the second picture with one. [Linked Image]

The article mentions "SASS champion “Gunfighter” Lassiter, aka Tom Wildenauer." He is the "go to" gunsmith to make the reproduction lever shotguns shoot smooth and fast for CAS.

Straight walled lever? 444 Marlin hands down.

Uprisings started or quelled, tornadoes rerouted, elections rigged.

You misspelled 45-70.
