I haven't.. Toilet hose, white part that screws onto the toilet valve just snapped. Glad we were home, it would have flooded the house. If we ever go out of town, think I will shut the water off to the house. And glad my wife was paying attention, I'm watching TV on the coach last night and wife says "Is one of the kids upstairs taking a shower?", I say "Yeah, probably.." She says "Can you go check.". It took no time to flood the bathroom upstairs and started pouring thru a light fixture downstairs..

Probably was over tightened when it was put on.

One of my neighbors actually had the tank break while on vacation. Upstairs toilet, too. They had to sheetrock the entire house but it honestly was never the same. Lucky you were home.

Having had lots of water trough issues lately, I wonder why there isn't some sort of smart device that you could add to a line that would say-'hey, this is excessive usage, maybe I should turn off'.

When I get my new well installed later this year there is going to be a bunch of redundancy built in.

This is an extremely common known failure, biggest problem is people tightening them with a tool or wrench causing too much pressure on the plastic nut.

They are designed to be hand tightened only.

I know of two homes completely flooded causing major damage and lengthy motel stays for remodeling because of the plastic toilet service line nut. I don't know for sure about the over tightening part. I wonder if the plastic gets fatigued over time. With some searching online you can find some with a metal nut vs. plastic. When I used to build homes I referred some guys to do the tear out for one of the two homes.

Over tightening makes sense. It took 8 years for it to fail, or longer. Hose was installed before we moved into the house.

If they have tool marks on them they definitely need to be replaced.

I agree with Guy. I've tightened these just thumb tight and never had an issue. The size and shape of the rubber seal indicates it doesn't need to be tool tight.

They make them. Supposedly they can shut down the house supply within 5 seconds of measuring irregular flow/a major leak. Hear they're kind of a PITA because they're overly sensitive.

Travelers sent me some type of sensor that connects to an app that is supposed to send an alert to your phone if excess moisture (a leak) is detected...haven't even gotten it out of the box yet though.

During the great freeze of 1982 a house in Abilene had a water line burst, the owners were living in Arizona for the winter. Theneighbor noticed that the outside brick was wet for about 2 foot high. They had 2 foot of water in the house, when they opened the door the water flooded the yard and flowed down the street.

Notice it also uses metal connectors.

I’m laughing now, but I wasn’t laughing in the 80’s. Wife and I got home about the same time. A hose fitting had broken and some of the house was 6” deep in water. The family cat was on the back of the couch and watching his food bowl floating by.

I saw a house the lady was out of town, flooded for 2 days before we went out there, it was upstairs. Made a mess.

I have seen it a few times in my career.

If headed out of town and you do turn the water off also turn the breaker off on your hot water heater. So not to damage the heating element when there is no water in the tank.
