I raise goats and you always have a few deaths. I always drag them to the same place. The other day I was driving by the dead goat dump and there were 4 mule deer does in the immediate area. I looked at the deer through binoculars and they were chewing on bones from the dead goats. I have also seen my donkeys in the area frequently and I suspect they do the same thing. I have seen cows chewing on bones and even antlers occasionally. Was wondering if the deer are getting calcium by chewing on the bones or what?

They'll chew on sheds also.

Looking for minerals their body is needing. Put out a mineral block for them there and a trail cam.

Seen it. Bones are a good mineral source.

Texas State University has a body farm there in San Marcos for forensic investigation purposes. There are decomposing human bodies out in the elements, and their cameras regularly capture deer chewing on human bones.

They need minerals that they are not getting otherwise. Put out a mineral block or multiple depending on how big your place is.
