I didn't read the article but let me guess ............ JBS are packers and they got in trouble for price fixing or manipulating supply in some way?

Yes… in South America first now a decade later here The big five are big 5 beef packers are JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill and National Beef. JBS has ownership in more then just themselves. the main packing plants listed are TX Panhandle and KS

On a side note, it's a shame such a critical industry boils down to such a few colossal players; I suspect it's just a matter of time before Bill Gates begins to acquire big-time shares if he hasn't already, an incalculable threat to Americans and our national security...

It’s been going on since 90’s it just is so flamboyant now that consumers are starting to yell about it. Never seen feeder go unsold and when packers got congress to allow Beef importation to “fix” demand I know we where in trouble. The give 5 Packers are to vertical integrated in the exporting countries and now here. But nonetheless article shows why there arent more packing houses

Hopefully this will spur on Congress to pass mandatory price reporting and negotiated cash and grid trade for these packers, ban USDA from using confidentiality as a means from reporting pricing. It’s a corporate racket that screws the common man, woman, family who enjoy beef and the folks that produce the cattle.
A settlement is an admission of guilt in my mind. But what’s 52 million when you make $700-1000 a head and you kill 600,000 plus head a year? Do the math on that.
If you need beef, buy from local producers. We will grow em and harvest them for you. Cut out the multiple middle men. They are obviously corrupt.

600,000 a year is wrong. Try 2.86 million head in 2020. When packer margins were at an all time high.

JBS is the biggest by far. Biggest in the world.

Read article that Tyson posted recorded record profits. What a lot of people don't understand is that cattle that are finished are a basically a perishable commodity.

I used to work with IBP and Excel a lot. They were the big players back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s

why aren't the cattle ranchers in Texas forming a CO-OP to pack under their own label and cutting JBS out of the market??

why aren't the cattle ranchers in Texas forming a CO-OP to pack under their own label and cutting JBS out of the market?? You mean like a direct ownership to market vertical integration strategy that goes from rancher to feed lot to processor to distributor? A decent size feed lot is 50k head so it’s rotating 5k head per month that are fed 120days, so processor size needs to be able to handle 5k head a month. How many ranchers ship more then 300 feeders a year? JBS alone has feedlot influence of close to a million head(via 5rivers and PAM stock holdings) they also have 16 plants for beef. Nut shell, JBS is big enough to influence USDA regulations and big enough to squeeze out competition. The capital requirements for feedlot and processor is staggering. Most ranchers also don’t have the capital it would require for start up, nor could they justify it on 300 head a year.

SO many people think that it should just be ranchers that are concerned about this matter, but anyone who eats meat should be concerned.

SO many people think that it should just be ranchers that are concerned about this matter, but anyone who eats meat should be concerned. It's insane that the producer price has been stagnant for 20+ years, while the price at the store has gone up 200-400%.

This might push me to start that direct from the ranch to the consumer grass fed beef business I have been thinking and talking about forever!
