Seems the high end grain free dog food was a bad idea and is killing dogs. The FDA issued a warning. Just read a message from one of my customer DVMs stating the same. As grain-free diets increased in popularity in 2018, the FDA received several reports of cases similar to Briars, so an investigation into this complex issue was initiated. In one study, 91% of dogs diagnosed with DCM were being fed a grain free diet. The exact correlation is still unknown, but if caught early and switched back to an appropriate diet, the heart can remodel back to a healthy state. This fad has driven dog food prices way up and turns out it was a marketing scam.

We knew it was a scam from the start. Grain free BS is a fabricated diet for wannabe hippies just like every other fad diet, dogs don’t give a darn about human fad diets

Yes, we switched back to grain, due to the vet and Bigpig suggesting it.
Note: we went with grain free due to his allergic reaction to something, so we changed detergents, house cleaning supplies,..etc. and just did not switch back.
Turns out it was dryer sheets and fabric softener. Hated them anyways wife loved the smells, but no longer used here, hooray!

I do know that certain types of grain can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. My mother had a Jack Russell that scratched constantly. Vet said it was grain in the dog food, maybe corn? This was several years ago.
She put the dog on another brand with no corn and the allergy went away. I think it's more prevalent in short haired breeds.

Wife and kids brought a dog home from the pound a few years ago .They said he has grain allergies, feed him grain free food. Turned out he was just mangy...

Never bought into the "grain free" fad.
I do however try to stay away from heavy corn based foods. Most of the better foods are made with some type of meat, usually chicken and rice. Then a bunch of other stuff to add fats, minerals and vitamins.
Purina Pro Plan is the most popular food amongst competitive retriever people and professionals. I think it's mostly just good marketing as the food is just a chicken and corn based kibble but costs 20% more than some other foods that IMO have better ingredients.
Pro Plan Victor Eukanuba Loyall
All good choices for working dogs

Victor is what I've been feeding. Seems to be quality food at a fair price and it's Texas based.

I switched to Victor from Pro Plan. Victor pricing is now the same as I was paying for Pro Plan.
