My buddy didn’t loose one animal up here last. We had 3 other snows also out side of the bad one. Any way he said key was keeping plenty of feed out, he made a killing selling does this year.. think he sold close to 15.

My neighbor has a small herd of blackbuck that just showed up one day. How they got over his 48" net fence is anyone's guess. I was not aware they couldn't take the cold. Being from India though that makes sense.

If you invested that much in new animals and didn't learn a lesson about building a shed and prepping for cold weather food/water, you get what you deserve.

I don't know about Blackbuck, but my buddy who has some property west of San Antonio (around Comfort) said there are a whole lot fewer Axis deer this year after last February's freeze.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

The more northern populations where a little more climatized for colder weather then the southern. One of the places I hunt lost 20 plus blackbucks but those where a free range non fed herd,

Thermal cover is key and some type of forage/supplement.

I semi lucked out last year. I was getting too many BB. I sold 20 to a trapper. He came out and set up the trap and got 19 does and one young male. Right after that the freeze hit. I lost all the rest except for 3 older males and one female. I found one dead male under the bulldozer and females scattered out in cedar breaks. Had kept out feed in different places but that cold for that long was too much for them. I sold them for $125 each and now they are bringing around $500 each. Shows you there must have been a heck of a die off. I remember going to Kerrville right after the freeze. There is a place a few miles before Kerrville on the left that is fairly cleared out of cedar. You could see dead BB scattered out all through it. Sickening.

we live in a development near Georgetown where folks have 10 to 25 acres. Was a herd of BB roaming out here with a buck that was beyond a trophy. During last years freeze our dog started barking at 3 am so I got up to check.

We have a screen porch with a deck off of it and the buck was curled up in the corner of our deck. He just looked up at me but did not leave so I just left him alone. Next morning I could see his tracks across our deck in the snow.

My next door neighbor found him dead two days later - froze to death

Sad loss of a beautiful animal
