I am terrible at using the search feature on here and didn’t see anything listed. But what is the preferred method for curing a fox tail that is already off the bone?

Disclaimer, I’m not a taxidermist. However, I have on at least a few occasions filled a tail (whitetail, mule deer, raccoon) with salt, let it sit for a few days, emptied it and stuck it on the end of my antenna. If there was any rotting or smell, I didn’t notice. But, I do know that the fur stayed on and that the tail remained in great shape… Until it went through several thousand miles of rain and wind. 😄

I’m a bit of a bubba when it comes to this, but what I’ve done with coon tail is to simply do nothing. All I did was put the tail in a live trap I have to keep critters from getting it, then leave it in a shed I have for two or three months. It did fine. It’s stiff. I moved it to my shop and a few months later discovered fire ants were getting to it, so I killed the ants. It’s been a couple of years now and it’s doing ok.

I ended up starting a soak in denatured alcohol. Will let it go for two-three weeks and see how it is from there. Then clean, shampoo, condition.
