I’ll never discount a Red Label, I’ve killed thousands of quail and dove with one. But they are heavy for a 20. In the mid 90’s my dad bought a 20ga Superposed lightning for $350. I don’t know who had it before him but it had a 15 1/2” LOP. Dad was 6’6” and it was too long for him. He never was a great shot and preferred a 12ga, I bought it from him and got rid of the spacers and put a kikeeze recoil pad 12 1/4 LOP on it. It’s perfect for me. I’ll shoot it until I die. I gave my oldest boy my old fixed choke Red Label for his 13th birthday this year. He just made 6’ and it fits him well. My youngest is a little bitty guy of 10 and still shooting the H&R 20. He was cleaning my Superposed the other day and said he thinks he could shoot it. I told him he wouldn’t be hunting with that shotgun until they throw dirt over me. I really like the new 725 lightning featherweight, so he may get his chance while I’m still breathing. We will see.

Why all the hate for the Red Label? Good American made shotgun, that won’t break the bank. I have a 12, 20, and 28 with the 12 and 28 being safe queens. The 20 is my go to workhorse that’s had thousands of rounds though it over 20+ years, and trouble free.

I have got an old 12 Gauge Red Label Woodside that I have had a couple of gunsmiths try and get the firing pins to not require heavy oiling before each hunt and a cracked and repaired stock (with 8 choke tubes) that I will make a deal on to anyone interested as its sat in a back of a safe for 10 years. The gun fits me better than the Brownings being a taller guy, put a ton of pheasants in pheasant heaven, but I got a number of O/Us handed down when my uncle passed away that I am now using along with my Franchi's.

That Franchi Instinct SL is nice in a 20Ga for the $$, kicks too hard in a 12 tho because its so light.

I love my red label 28 ga, but they are getting out of hand price wise. Mine is a golden quail. 20 ga is a little more affordable. No other O/U has been as fun to me as the two Red Labels I have had. They open quick and are smooth shooting.

If I was buying a O/U for quail and pheasant, I would look at a Rizzini BR 110 in 20 or 16 ga. Nice gun and won’t break the bank. Franchi Instinct SL is also worth a look.

My current favorite O/U is a Berettta Silver Pigeon. It has 20 ga and 28 ga barrels. 28 for quail and 20 for pheasant. If you look around you can find a few on gunbroker and they are usually reasonably priced. Just saw a Verona with 20 and 28 ga barrels on gunbroker for a good price. They are Italian made by Rizzini and are good guns.

Used Brownings are plentiful and are hard to beat as well.

Now, will it be pen raised birds or wild? Wild birds tend to be longer shots and you may want something in the 20, 12 or 16 ga for pheasant. But pen raised that flush close can be hammered with 28 gauge just fine.

^^ this is number one.
I have a couple of CZ over unders that I think are perfect for field use. They are far from the best guns I own but both do a great job. I have a 28 ga I use for quail and a 12 ga pheasant gun.
CZ is worth a look if you want a well made gun on a budget. I bought the 12 ga on THF for $500, basically new, in the box.

Not many people can buy an off the rack gun to fit them. Do a point of impact test to see if the pattern hits where your pointing and have the stock bent accordingly.

All aside i love my Rizzini BR 110. Weight is a big factor to me. 6 Pounds is my sweet spot for 20 gage

Several years ago, I bought a Franchi Alcione 20ga from a member here and love this little gun. Light weight (7lbs) and swings great. It's probably going to my GDaughter when I'm gone.

There are lots of good ones out there. Stick with a brand name, go handle a few and pick the one that you feel fits you best. You're not likely to go wrong.

Man, what a loaded question (pun intended), my go to upland/dove gun is a Belgian made 20ga Browning superposed. I like that particular gun so much I have 2. 1st one I mowed about a million lawns, stacked a million bales of hay, and every other odds and ends job a 14-15 year old boy could do to save up the money to buy, it was 850 bucks used in 1985, as I recall. Cannot imagine what they go for now. The second I inherited from my Uncle Bill, it was the inspiration behind the one I bought all those years ago. He would let me shoot it once in a while and I fell in love!

+1 for CZ. I bought a Sharptail last year (their side-by-side) and I'm really impressed with it. I can only assume their O/U models are pretty comparable. I've heard good things about the Teal.
