You know that I lust after killing the polka dotted pig. The Boar Light is up and working, and the pig has been under it eating corn, while I’m having wine at the house. But tomorrow, perhaps his rump roast will be mine. Of course, I have said that before, and his rump remains attached to the rest of him. Talk is cheap.

But…sooner or later he’ll make a mistake. And I thought that was the good news till my wife says “well what happens when your shoot him. You’re gonna be bored when you shoot the only hog we have on the place”? Truly, I had not considered that. Well, I can’t shoot him a little at a time, so, in a manner of speaking, I have to go ‘whole hog’. Pun intended…

Get em! I doubt seriously he's the only one on the place.

Consider baiting the surrounding trails after you zap him. In a couple weeks, you’ll have company.

Not sure if his days are numbered or yours...they tend to leave an area after that much time in one place in my experience, especially if there are no other hogs around.

As RD says, he probably won't hang around forever. Shoot him when you get the chance. There are more fish in the sea, and hogs in the countryside as well.
There's pretty much no way you'll be hog-free forever. Heck, it might be he's running off other hogs and keeping your feeder for himself. Once he's gone, you may be covered up in hogs.

Hmmm, you may be right. There was a sounder there for a couple of days before they left. Maybe he ran them off.

I’ll try for him (again) this evening.

Shoot him and enjoy that rump roast. Bait and wait there will be more. I've been on places where we didn't have hogs until it rained and when it dried up they were gone again but one day out of the blue they came to stay.

Got him. He’s in the cooler. Boy, did he stink. We’ll keep him on ice for a week and get the stink/gamey taste out of the meat.

He wasn’t real big, maybe 120 pounds, but with the shoulders, hindquarters, back straps, tenderloins, and ribs, the cooler is pretty heavy.

I hope some more pigs show up now.

How about that! Way to go! 603, can you give a lil info on the caliber, shot placement and shot distance?

Sure. The distance was about 140 yards. Rifle is a Tikka in 260, and the bullet was a 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I hit him in the spine (intentionally) and he went straight down. He was still moving his front legs, and I’ve had dead hogs run off before, so I parked one in his head. And that, as they say, was that.

The sound of the shot had barely faded when my phone rang. The neighbor called to ask “was that you”, and he was over in 10 minutes with a sack of sharp knives. I’m really lucky to have a neighbor like that. The help was great.

And let me say, one more time, that the Leupold VX5 3-15 with the fire dot is much loved. It really helps with shot placement in failing light. It’s about the only rifle I hunt with these days because it’s the only one with the fire dot.

NIce going! I was just waiting for you to connect. Cool to have handy neighbors. Keep us posted on how the meat turns out. I don't eat boars unless they are under like 100 lbs. Hope he turns out well. Congrats!

SWiron, like you I never processed stinky boars, using them instead for coyote bait. But that neighbor, he eats them all, stinky or not. He keeps them on ice for 7 days. I was skeptical, but he sent over some steaks from a big stinking boar, and they were great, not gamey in the slightest. So maybe I’ve learned something. We’ll see in about a week.

That neighbor is an interesting guy. Ex army and ex cop and spent 13 years in Bolivia. Lived off the land. Says he’ll cook us an armadillo in the shell. The guy can really cook, so I guess I’ll try some armadillo eventually.

Congratulations! I just love a happy ending.

Sounds like you have an excellent neighbor.
I agree with the neighbor in that the only time I've discarded a hog is when I shot so many I just couldn't clean 'em all. The large boars have typically been used for ground meat, but I got a copy of The Hog Book earlier this year and there are some recipes in there specifically for using large boars (mostly for things with a fair amount of seasoning like tacos and carne guisada) that I plan to try.

That is really cool! Definately keep us posted. I open to find a way to utilize more of these guys if there is a method that works.

As to stinky hogs and whitetail bucks, I did get a gaminess removal process from a mom of one of the gal tennis players at the high school. The mom and I were talking hunting, and she (tough looking, short, and dipping snuff) was mostly a pig hunter and trapper. I mentioned that I used the big stinky hogs for coyote bait, and she said they ate even the stinky ones. Her method was to cover the pig parts with ice in a cooler, and put salt over the ice. Drain and replace ice as needed. Repeat that for a day or two and then switch to just the ice. We started doing that with pigs and buck deer and it worked great, but I still put the really stinky big hogs in the back pasture for coyote bait. But then, the neighbor, who did a similar process, said he kept the pig parts on ice for 7 days, but doesn’t use the salt. The pork he gave us that came off a big hog I had the misfortune to smell had no gaminess at all, so he’s doing something right. And we have adopted his process.

That's what I've been doing for some years and seems to work fine.
