Apartment second story floor purlins are in! I don’t think the dozer could take this thing down.

Have a few more windows to frame out and put the floor purlins for the loft in the shop. Should all come together pretty quick after that. I’ve got a wedding to go to this weekend so I don’t expect to be able to get much done for a week or so.

Thanks got following along. Hope you’re enjoying the pics!

Got all the frame welded out. Trimmed doors and windows.

[Linked Image]

Called in the reinforcements to get this thing banged out. We will finish the roof and hopefully have the exterior trim knocked out tomorrow.

Dangit!

Wish I would have seen this before you sheeted the wall over the shed roof.

Sheet the shed roof.
Flashing that goes over the roof, but behind the wall sheet.
Then upper wall sheet.

It is a mechanical closure instead of relying on sealant.

As bad as I hate to say it, I would recommend taking those sheets off, and going back in the more reliable order.

I went back and forth with this for about a week.

We opted to keep the integrity of the living space intact and keep the wall sheets whole. I’ve got die formed transition to match the wall sheets and lap over the roof. I just figured a little water dripping down onto the porch, vs. cutting the wall sheets and introducing leak points into the house envelope was a better idea.

Metal company shorted me my corners. I’ll slap those up and then finish gutters.

I’m whooped.

Are you not concerned that the black roof will be inefficient as chit?

No, it will be spray foamed. I bet we can cool it like a meat locker.

Spray foam is unbelievable when applied to the underside of any type of roof. We have 6" on our roof decking, with closer to 1 foot in the peak. Our new home is almost double the roof sqft of our old 2-story home. The AC at the old home had recently been replaced, so the new house is a similar Seer. Our highest summer bill this year was only 60% of hour highest bill the two pervious years, and we had gas hot water and range at the old house. On a 102 degree day, I was up in the attic installing a cell phone booster. The temp in the attic was within 5 degrees of the temp in the house.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

It’s been a minute!

Crazy year end at the real job/holiday/COVID, etc.

We got the well drilled and they finally put meters in my boxes. Got the overhead door installed. Like everything lately - they sent me two uninsulated panels to go with my 4 insulated… ugh.

Second story floor is in - 1 1/8” Advantech… weighs 125lbs a sheet and cost $118/sheet. Hopefully won’t have to do that ever again.

We will pop chalk lines tomorrow and hopefully start framing up the interior walls.

I’m wanting to build a “floating” staircase, similar to below with only a monorail underneath. Anyone built something like that? Any tips?

Very nice looking barndo! What wall height is that? The floating stairways I’ve seen usually included a steel or gluelam beam going across the top of the stair where it meets the second floor, for support. Not sure if that’s a code or requirement.

I’m halfway into mine and went 16’ because the 2nd level was just a bonus room and not primary living area. Went with a GC instead of DIY and it’s taking forever!. Just finished the spray foam. I’ve concluded good subs don’t want/need to travel an hour from nearest big city to the middle of no where for work. Certainly no cheaper than building a new house my way.

Didn’t get started on the interior until today. Wished I was a framer.

Building gable/rake walls when out of practice is a nice little math lesson. Not to mention standing them by yourself over a 9’ loft 😳…

Got most of the long gable wall with windows framed as well. Hope to have the upstairs framed tomorrow.

How did you attach your wall to the metal frame?
