A friend gave me a partial box of old 30-06 Rem. Sprg.- Accelerator cartridges. The cartridge is 55 grain PSP. Sabot, a plastic collar that allows the use of smaller diameter and lighter bullet which can be driven to high velocity. I am not familiar with this cartridge and am not sure if I should use it in my 30-06 rifle. What say those that know this cartridge? Thanks!

They were an attempt by Remington back in the 70’s to expand the versatility of the 30-06 to include Varmint hunting. It didn’t catch on because of it poor accuracy at even short distances. They are suppose to have collectors value due to their limited production.

yup, they made them in 30-06, 308 and 30-30. i shot a box of the 30-30 years ago when they came out. Accuracy was not bad but not great either. The 30-06 was listed at 4080fps.

In my 30-06 bolt rifle, the accuracy was acceptable at 1-1 1/2", and I even used it for hunting coyotes and one antelope. They were fun, but expensive to shoot, when you could have a 22-250 and do it for half the price. I would save as a collector item, or move on GunBroker.

I heard the same thing on accuracy, not what they were played up to be. Also, heard feds didn’t like them, as no traceable rifling marks left on the bullets.

Wilhunt, it's exactly what you stated. A 30-06 case with a plastic sabot with .224" bullet in it. I load these on occasion in 308 Win and 30-06, and a few in 300 Win Mag. Any 30 cal round can be made to shoot these really. The 30-06 should have them running about 3800-4000 fps.
I had a guy order several hundred of these because he "had to shoot 1000 yards" and this was the round his gun was set up for.

Thanks for the info on this ammo. I only have 9 of them, maybe follow Blanks suggestion and keep as a collector item.

I remember them in 30-30 WIN also. They were expensive but fast. https://static-cdn.ammunitiontogo.c...fe90056bd804ac813ae37/R/e/Rem3030acc.jpgRemington Ammunition 55 Grain Soft-Point (SP) Ammo Details This is Remington 30-30 55gr. Accelerator soft point ammo. This ammo contains a 55gr. .223 soft point bullet in a 30 cal. Sabot. The bullet travels at 3600 FPS. This is some devastating ammo and has fabulous penetrating characteristics.
One shot is all it should take.
