I know this is going to be a silly question for all of you but I have never been an AR man, bolts are my rifle. Just what is the purpose of the forward assist on an AR? Thanks Daniel

Shove the round home.

In my practice, I keep the rifle shouldered with my left hand on the handguard, right hand reaches around and releases the bolt, then slams the forward assist, then back to grip.

If the bolt is already closed, then right hand charges the gun, smashes the forward assist, and then on the grip.

Equal to making sure the bolt is closed on a bolt gun
A little extra push that isn’t always necessary

Simply an assist to help chamber a round if it is not fully in battery. I used it a few times with an M-16 but I don't think I have ever needed to use one in an AR.

It's not what you say, or think, that counts. It is what you DO!

I’d rather have it than not. Had to use it once when my gun was so dirty that the bcg wouldn’t close all the way. Pop it with the palm of your hand a few times and it will drive the bolt home.

After I learned the correct way from a good buddy who is a Veteran and armorer, I don't think I ever used the FA since...
Pull back and lock bolt with bolt catch, push charge handle back in until it latches, engage safety and then push bolt release and send it home.
Letting the bolt slam forward seems so foreign if you are used to closing it on bolt guns.

Cheers,

The counterpoint to all this (and I agree with most of what is being said) is forcing a cartridge into the chamber that does not want to go will only make the problem worse. However, when I get into a hunting blind I load the rifle and drop the BCG down gently so as not to make a bunch of noise. Then the forward assist is used to make sure everything is locked up.

So sometimes it's the solution and sometimes it makes a problem 10X worse.

"Group think" is not thinking. It is the lack of independent thought. It is a cancer of the mind.

I typically use the FA just to make sure a round is fully seated, especially if the rifle is dirty after a hundred or so rounds.

This.

I had a problem where it wasn’t an issue with the cartridge, it was mechanical tightness that wouldn’t let the bolt slam home with normal use of the charge handle. A clean and lube eliminated the issue.

I’d rather have a side charger AR. Never liked the rear charger/forward assist combo.

I often use my FA in hunting situations. I often slightly pull back on the charging handle to make sure a round is chambered. When I return the charging handle I give the FA a bump or two to make sure she is all the way home. Also when I pull back and find I don’t have a round chambered but need to have one, I can creep the bolt back to grab a round, creep it forward then use the FA to fully close the bolt.
