Looking for a hard maple or white oak slab to put on top of our kitchen island

It is 54” long by 39” wide

Prefer 2” thick but May be okay with 1.5”

Just putting it here in case anyone has an option

Thx

Are you looking for a single slab that size, or would a glue up be fine? (The glue joints are stronger than the wood itself.)

I'd recommend hard maple over any oak. Oaks have large pores, will soak up more water, and will show wear more readily than a hard maple top.

I do woodworking on the side. Depending on your needs / wishes, I can send you an estimate.

not looking for a single large piece. we are looking for the traditional edge grain, glued butcher block

I built a 2" thick walnut end grain butcher block top for our island last year. Originally, I finished it with Rubio Monocoat but it wasn't holding up as I had hoped. We ended up recoating it with traditional watco butcherblock block conditioner and that works great. It gets retreated every 2-3 months or when substances get hard to wipe off. Ours is 28" X 48"; yours is going to be huge. It will look awesome.

Before I decided to build my own we got bids from a couple of local cabinet shops. Not only were they expensive but I found out later that they simply buy the Hardwood Reflections tops from Home Depot, cut them to size, route a profile on the edges and charge a premium for it. If you are paying for scratch built custom, make sure they are actually custom.

Good luck and post pics when you get it installed.

We bought our counter tops at the shop from Lowes. I had to glue two together to get the width I wanted. They look really nice and the price was pretty reasonable.
