Where is this? My first thought was a bear... Mine too, but I’m not sure, Houston County.

Cat would be my guess.
Bear would leave black hair all in it from scratching its back.
Bears ARE working their down from Arkansas and over from Louisiana, but I don't know if any have made it as far West as Houston County yet.

I’ve seen damage like that caused by a red stag before....
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

My guess is going to be a bear clawing that tree since the height above the ground rules out to many other animals.

I have them (ashe juniper) all over my ranch and the surrounding land. I've been seeing that for my entire life and sometimes it will go 8-12 feet high. Rats and squirrels stripping bark with their teeth for winter nests. I only see it this time of year and I've watched the rats through my thermal scanners doing it at night.

I have them (ashe juniper) all over my ranch and the surrounding land. I've been seeing that for my entire life and sometimes it will go 8-12 feet high. Rats and squirrels stripping bark with their teeth for winter nests. I only see it this time of year and I've watched the rats through my thermal scanners doing it at night. Squirrels for sure do that around here (strip cedar/juniper) trees to make/line nests, but I haven't seen one peeled to that extent. Good observation though and a plausible submission.

They strip about 10 times as much as they need for some reason and then go the ground and pick out exactly what they are looking for.

Its actually a form of fungi . After being transplanted to the host tree the fungi makes its way to just below the bark where it starts to rapidly multiply and take in oxygen and nutrients from the trunk. Once the fungi starts to digest the nutrient rich underlying bark its then turned into flatulences. The violent expulsion of gas causes the bark of cedar or juniper tree to explode outwardly often resembling some sort of animal marking. Looks like you have some fungi ut felis!
