Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter in .44 mag.

Arrived today at the gun store and could not be more excited. My first revolver after a lot of research and trying some out and one that I do plan on genuinely hunting with. Picked up a box of hornady leverevolutions which I know do more than enough on hogs (use the same bullet on my .45-70).

Any recs for some whitetail/red stag cartridges? Would also appreciate recs for some good plinking ammo be it a toned down .44 mag or .44 spl

It’s hard to beat those Rugers. Pistol hunting is very fun and rewarding. I’ve killed deer with 45ACP from a Kimber, 45Colt from a Ruger Blackhawk, 460XVR from a S&W. 22 LR from a Ruger MK1 on rabbits, squirrels, and coyotes.

My go-to hunting bullet is a cast semi wad cutter 315 grain from my 460XVR. We keep it around 2150fps.

Leverevolution ammo in 44 mag work great on deer.

That's a sweet setup. When it comes to revolvers, Ruger is King. Sorry, I know nothing about loading for 44 mag.

Unique and 240 grain cast bullets makes a nice plinking load. Get on single action forum lots of good information on that site.

240 Grain cast bullets with Unique can be loaded soft to .44 Special levels (750-800 fps) or near max/max to duplicate factory ballistics (around 1300 fps).

The load I shot in .44 Magnums for years is a 240 Hornady XTP, 23.0 H110 (about a grain under maximum but still gets over 1400 fps from a 7.5 inch barrel), Winchester brass and CCI 350 primers. This load has taken one deer with a 7.5 inch Ruger Redhawk and two hogs from a 7.5 inch Ruger Super Redhawk. With open sights and younger eyes lol this load will put six rounds into 3.5-4 inches at 100 yards with open sights and 2.5-3 inches at 100 yards with a 4x Leupold scope.

Does the Leverrevolution ammo shot in a revolver length barrel get full burn?

The reason I ask is I shot a doe with 45lc Lever revolution out of a 3" judge at ~15 yards a few years ago and it's didn't perform well at all.
I found her dead, but only by Gods grace and a little luck- she went a good ways and was layed up in high grass upon finding her.
One hole in, no hole out.
I always wondered if it was the ammo's fault since the LeverRevolution is most likely designed to be shot out of ....lever action rifles.
( I would assume rifle powder for rifle length barrels).

I would look at hornady’s website. The .225 gr FTX ballistics were tested out of a 7.5” barrel which indicates revolver length. I was told once you go under 4” barrels, your chances for not getting a full burn go up regardless of the ammo you’re shooting (this context was referring to .44 mag, so not sure about other calibers)
