I got drawn for the black powder hunt in January. Any advice on the terrain or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hunted that same hunt last year. Not a lot of deer but a lot of hogs. They were everywhere. Had fun chasin pigs with my Hawken. It's mostly thick woods and swamp. Bring rubber boots and be prepared to walk a lot! Also, don't leave anything valuable in your truck. Another guy there had his truck broke into there in the parking area.

I have never heard about the hirsch unit but if it is anything like the other units the hogs are everywhere. In these places you can either sit at selected areas and wait for them to come or go walk the area and find them. Both methods work well. I will be in the boars den for the muzzie hunt. I would carry a sidearm also. I got charged last week and if I had a muzzy in my hands I would be toast.

We are all members of the same club of hunters, so I'll help out my brothers and sisters and confirm that Hirsch is a complete waste of time. In 2 1/2 days, my trail cam looking over what looks like prime territory did not snap even one photo. Nada. Zip. Zilch. I sat for one afternoon and one morning and saw three squirrels, though two of them may have been the same one, which means I saw two squirrels. It is very strange in there -- it LOOKS LIKE it should be great. The terrain is right. There's acorns aplenty. But I saw many mudholes without a single track of any kind in them, and that's just weird. Contrast that with Brierwood, which is basically one huge pig wallow. I'm not sure you can take two steps in a row in Brierwood without stepping on pig tracks or rooting damage. I note that Page and Brierwood are on the west side of Trinity River and Hirsch is on the east side -- no idea if that matters, just sayin'. I won't go back to Hirsch again.

One of my coworkers hunted Hirsch a few weeks ago and his partner shot a nice doe on the edge of the property. They never saw any pigs but did see some signs.

Leave your truck doors unlocked with nothing valuable inside, that way they will not break your windows.

I'm not saying there were absolutely zero signs -- in hours of walking I think I did see two pig tracks. And I did find two tape flags which I assume means that at some time in the past, two animals were shot and tracked. But that isn't enough to justify hunting Hirsch anymore, at least not in my book.

I agree with you I probably wont sign up for it next year either. The guys I knew never saw a pig so the place isnt worth a darn if they dont have pigs to shoot.

Did you have a bunch of dogs running everywhere during your hunt.

I won't sign up for any of the Trinity River hunts anymore. I live not to far away so it's convenient. But I don't want to waste my preference points on them when there are some much better hunts to be had in those categories.
