So its finally getting cold, but November ans December were quite warm as everyone knows.

So my question is during warm years why are there not more bluewing teal in north texas?

Cause they are vacationing in Mexico. They are the first one’s down. If anything this time of year it would be a GWT.

I killed one in Waco on a hard south wind on last day of season several years ago. Killed one in northeast Kansas in early December last year. And it’s a staple duck in southeast Texas all season.

Yes I understand they winter along the texas coast and Mexico. But when we had as many 80 degree days as we had this November and December why didn't they save their energy and stay in north texas?

There is hardly ever a reason for any ducks to be in north Texas. So there is that.

Just passing through

A few spots I hunt I see blue wings all season. In small groups but still always have the chance for one.

BWT in general do not migrate by weather..

Even when it's 90 degrees in September they move on.

I killed one on Lake Fork in November 20 years ago. In 30 years of duck hunting it is the only one I have seen after September. There is nothing to keep them here. Once they leave their summer homes they are headed south and don't hang around NTX for long. While it may warm it is probably not up north.

There’s not a ton in se Texas this year either. I was lucky to shoot that one trophy bird on a wood duck hunt. The ones that are still around, fly during non shooting time.

Them and wood ducks seem to be the wussies of the bird world. Just as soon as we have a heavy frost here in Idaho, they are long gone!! Our duck season usually opens the first week of October, and I have only killed one drake BWT in 40 years!!

They supposedly migrate with moon phases primarily, not weather

I killed 2 BWT hens today. They were both singles, no drakes. We did kill two nice GWT drakes.

That is correct also length of day is primary too in their migration. First ones to come down and first to head north.

Doesn’t take much to push em south. Just a couple of cool fronts and they are gone.

I believe this to be true.

BWs in particular don't migrate with weather. It can be 100 degrees and they are moving on after a few days.

We shoot a lot of BWs in September and we will get one amazing hunt in, one good hunt and one slow hunt every year and never know which weekend it will be.

I have killed them on the first weekend or two of the regular season but it is a rare occasion.

Still have yet to kill a teal since big duck season opened. We’ve been covered up on mallards, wood ducks, and gadwall.
I’ll take that all day long. But just kinda shocked. Haven’t seen a pintail yet either. Kinda crazy.

I have a dozen bluewing decoys. Do I even need them for north Texas?
