Indeed it is. Perhaps owing to the soil it has been in (not too abrasive or rough). IF it is what I think it is....its a pretty old point

Pretty sure its a Hardaway (or transitional one). It does look as if the left side has been lightly retouched. The right side is still excurvate as is common with the point (though straight sides are seen too). The other (left side) is almost straight as if having been repaired/resharpened on that side. Hard to say without having it in hand. But a very nice point and excellent material. Good find. up

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

What's neat about the point also is that if you hold it to the sun or some light source, you can see through it. This is very unusual material for my area of Houston County. As an example of the usual petrified wood material, here is one my wife found two weeks ago approximately four feet from the one I found. [Linked Image]

Yes, that is a really cool point and unusual material for this area. I love points like that you can pretty much see through.

Wow those are totally cool points! Are those from your days in central Texas?

No, no.......

Those are just a few that I made with material that is either somewhat translucent or changes color under strong light. Just demonstrating the same phenomenon as the point you found.

Virtually every point I've found in Central Texas (dozens and dozens over the years) are completely opaque.

But I do like the ones you can see through. So I will sometimes make one from Agate or Obsidian.

You got some skills! LOL I was wondering why those were so perfect. As far as points go, I am looking for that Holy Grail on my property of paleo items.

Nice deer man. I’ve hunted East Texas all my life and it’s definitely hard hunting. It does get frustrating sometimes.

As many as you have already found (presumably all surface finds) I'd say there is a good chance the area was used repeatedly over the years. If so, anything is possible. IF you were to locate an old encampment site...then 'digging' would probably turn up a lot of artifacts. Sadly, most will be rough since one of the most common materials in your area is petrified wood and it is simply very hard to work. The exception being petrified palm wood...which can produce very nice points.

But...better materials were sought out and traded for at times so you might find pretty much anything but large blades. Some very nice artifacts are found from time to time. Pottery is another thing you'll probably find if you dig any.

My points are virtually all found digging as well as broken pottery shards on a small rise about 100 yards from a creek. I have found pottery and one point in the other wet weather creek. The rise was apparently a campground for thousands of years due to the different types found. I have found pieces of palmwood but not points made of it. There is another rise at the county road in front of our place and every time they grade it after rains a guy that lives down the road finds some pretty nice points. Supposedly there was a nice spring that flowed up into Spanish times on the property next to me only a couple of hundred yards from where I am finding all the points, tools and pottery.

Yes, East Texas if full of Springs and Branches that may not be flowing now....but were many years prior. I have live springs on my property and in some places on hillsides they come and go even in the 35 years I've been here. While I don't have a lot of interest in pottery (since nearly all of it will be small pieces) the Caddos and other indigenous people) were famous for making fantastic pieces. They were master potters.

It's fun to find and note the different types of points you'll find at different levels (strata) when digging. East Texas generates so much top soil....it is difficult to locate good sites here....but easier digging than most places in Central Texas, though CenTex is loaded with artifacts. Have fun....keep after it and thanks for sharing your finds. up
