I went to the gun range today to finally sight in a Sauer Model 100 that I plan to give to my grandson. This rifle is "new to me", so it does have some rounds through it already. Well, I loaded a single shell and much to my surprise I could not move the bolt handle downward. So I then tried to bring the bolt handle back to unload it and could not get it to budge. Fortunately, one of the range staff members was able to help. He took a rubber mallet and tapped on the bolt handle. Well, that solved part of the problem in that we got the bolt and the shell case out, but the bullet (120 grain Barnes TTSX) remained in the chamber. That was solved with a cleaning rod and the shell came out with not too much trouble. We tried another shell but only gently tried to close the bolt. The same thing happened but we were able to remove the shell because the bolt was still workable.

I am a hunter, not a gunsmith or an expert on the intricacies of reloading and its glossary. I now have 3 boxes of these shells that will not work with this rifle. What I need is some help as to what is causing the problem so that I will have an idea of what to say to the manufacturer (special ordered from Pendleton) to see how to best resolve this. Thanks in advance.

Another brand of ammo will show whether the issue is ammo or rifle. Go/no-go chamber gauges are more scientific, but I doubt most smiths have them yet for the prc. FWIW, I had a chamber issue with my Sauer 100 in 9.3 Mauser so it may not be the ammo. The distributor had my rifle fixed, perhaps a bit slower than I liked, but all’s well that ends well, and the rifle now shoots lights out.

I’m assuming this is factory loaded ammo? Seems like a short throat.
How close are you to actually getting the bolt closed? Do you have a seating due that could shorten the oal up just a tiny bit?

There’s ways of finding this out with live round, color your bullet with a sharpie gently drop it in and attempt to close the bolt pull it back out you’ll see where your making contact.

Of course make sure you have the gun on safe. I like to remove the ejector when I do this so I can feel everything and I’m not fighting it.

Howdy.

Thanks for the responses. TAB: I pushed the bolt forward but made no progress at all when pushing downward to close the bolt. I have no tools at all regarding reloading etc. I am pretty sure it is the ammo, not the rifle. I'll try to find some factory ammo, probably the Hornady ELD-X since I've seen a lot of good reviews. I know it will be tough to find any at a reasonable price, but it would show that, at least for this rifle, it is an ammo issue. The other option would be to test the ammo in a different rifle. None of my buddies have a 6.5 PRC, so I might have to start a thread to see if any THFer close to me is willing to test these shells in his 6.5 PRC. If it works in his rifle I'd be willing to sell my 3 boxes at a reasonable price since they are of no use to me. I ordered them from Pendleton and had them loaded with 120 grain Barnes TTSX (https://pendletonammunition.com/shop?cat=rifle-ammo) But my first step will be to try different ammo in my rifle to see which is the probable culprit.

I bet they are simply too long and that rifle has a shorter throat.
If that was loaded off once fired brass the headspace could be wrong to.

I’d just grab any 6.5 prc and see if it chambers, the eldx tends to be a longer and a different ogive so if your throats short it will make contact before the bolt closes

Try re-chambering brass fired from that chamber. If it goes in easy, the bullet is seated out too far.

Correct, never fired it yet. The shell that got jammed was the first time I tried to chamber a shell. I have other rifles so not in a huge hurry, but no telling when ammo will be more available at reasonable prices. Will try a different brand shell and also try to find someone close to home that has a 6.5 prc to see if a different rifle will load my shells with no problem.

Can you post a close up photo of the bullet that jammed?

It does sound like the bullet is seated out too long. If you have a caliper to measure the COAL of the loaded round, I could tell you if it's the ammo or possibly the chamber/rifling cut short. But my bet is on the ammo.

Is there perhaps another cartridge with similar dimensions you may be using instead of 6.5PRC?

Any updates on what was the source of the problem?

Update: No luck finding any factory ammo (since I am not willing to pay $120 or more for a box). I also haven't found anyone locally with a 6.5 PRC to try my ammo. I contacted Pendelton Ammo and they feel that they probably loaded them too long. They are willing to redo them to fit a Sauer 100 chamber. I'll need to ship the ammo back to them. Who ships ammo -- Fed EX, UPS? I've never shipped ammo before and am not sure what carriers will do it. Thanks.

Thanks for reporting back. Sounds like you're on track to find the culprit.

This forum's members are awesome. I just got a PM offer from 70GOAT (Tom) in Houston. He'll be sending me a couple of Hornady factory shells to see if they'll cycle in my Sauer.

Update: I got the shells from fellow THFer Tom today. Well, I am so glad I tested because it looks like it is more of a rifle issue. With the ELD-X ammo, it fed into the chamber both from the top and from the magazine, but the bolt handle will not go down to close it down. At least the ELD-X shell didn't jam in the chamber. Without a shell, the bolt cycles just fine. I have not heard of anyone having feeding issues with the factory ELD-X ammo. I don't have any accurate calipers or gauges, but when I eyeball the ELD-X shell and the Pendleton ammo, they looked very very close to the same. I am no expert, but it seems like something is going on with the bolt. It looks like it's time to find a local gunsmith, but what say you THF experts?

Sure sounds like a rifle issue that someone passed along instead of getting fixed. I think a good Smith can fix it,
