I learned that rutting activity can occur year-round as I saw some early season activity, early Nov., then secondary rut activity in early Dec. on a 7yo buck I took and finally in late Dec. when I saw 4 bucks chasing a young doe hard, taking an 8pt. Also learned to wait for all chasing bucks to show as the 4th one about 20 seconds after I shot the 2nd one was the largest, 10pt with a G2 "flyer" that I was only left to watch since in a 1 mature buck county, LOL. Finally, I witnessed quite a few bucks in agriculture while driving to know I want to plant in a food plot next season, been 5+ years since I have had one planted. What all have you all learned or confirmed???

That I don't like hunting when its 80 degrees and I don't like hunting when its 18 degrees.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

That it’s sometimes best to take what’s given to you as a bigger one is not always around the corner.
Midwestern bucks have the opposite of ground shrinkage.
The saying if you hunt long enough, someday , you are gonna lose an animal is 100% true. Hunt often enough and your card is gonna get pulled. Don’t have to like it but you are gonna have to deal with it.
That as much as we enjoy hunting, at the end of it all it is just a pastime that’s meant to be enjoyed, not to get stressed or worked up over
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

KInda learned and kinda confirmed how hard it is to hit the vitals of a buck with a compound bow if he wants to drop and turn like they often do. A friend has been compiling a bunch of videos to show what has to be taken into consideration to make an ethical shot. Not always, but often, those deer can drop and turn so far and so fast that I dont see how anyone can feel good about a shot unless the shot is very close. Hes using slow motion and accounting for the distance and speed of arrow etc. Based on what Ive seen it appears that you can aim as low as possible and maybe still be in the vitals at 20 yards, but that same scenario at 30 yards and you may be too high. To each his own but from what Ive learned, Im sticking to my crossbow and still keeping shots inside 30.
At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR Keep your gratitude higher than your expectations. RWH

Learned that it is a little bit of a bummer to shoot my buck on opening morning....kinda takes the anticipation and motivation out of it the rest of the season. I always seem to have a few nice bucks show up mid December and hang around and not being as dedicated I didn't spend as much time in the stand as I usually do. However, I was able to take my kiddos a little more and they enjoyed it...with no pressure to kill anything I was able to not care too much if we only sat in the stand for 30 minutes, Lol.

Confirmed a wet spring and summer does indeed equate to a good year for above average antlers.

I learned that maroon must be great camouflage. Parked my maroon Tundra on a fence-line sendero. Young doe came out not more than 20-30 yards from it and acted liked it wasn't there. It fed in that same small area for about 45 minutes and even bedded down for a few minutes before it got up and fed some more.

To each his own but from what Ive learned, Im sticking to my crossbow and still keeping shots inside 30. This year I drew back my recurve and the buck busted me. At 12 yards I figured he was too close to duck it. Left it fly and was amazed to see the arrow zip thru the space he has just occupied. He had time to completely turn and run before the arrow got there. With a compound bow that shoots twice as fast, I don’t believe a deer can completely duck my arrow at 20 yards. 30 yes. That said, ideally you still want him close. My buck I shot in Ohio I had him at 24 yards and still wanted him a tad closer. My guide looked at me like I was nuts. To think that hitting a 275 lb deer at 24 yards would be difficult sounds crazy, But it’s all about you feel about the shot. Ended up double lunging him at 20 yards.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If all you find is a spot of blood 50 yards from the shot, call a tracking dog.
Cows don't always ruin a hunt.
Only use ribeye for cheesesteaks.

I learned that there’s nothing like early season hunting. Due to a really nasty hospital stay, I didn’t get to hunt until the last 2 weeks. I saw nothing. It’s my own land in Montague County. 133 acres of thick oaks. I have 5 feeders that were filled and maintained by grandsons. I’ve never had a deer season that I saw nothing. I hunted 6 days. One grandsons fiancé got a 160 pound 10 point with a small rack. Happy for her and I’ll try to find a doe for the meat.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Learned or have finally convinced myself to enlarge my feeder pens by double for next season. Worth a try and will likely bring in more, bigger deer into them...
