The thermal optic i have is rated for 300/7mm mag. My question is, I have never owned those two calibers so I have no reference to know if a 450 BM upper on an AR platform would exceed the optic’s recoil rating. I certainly don’t want to trash an expensive thermal by trial and error. I would certainly be taming the recoil with a good brake on the 450 upper.
Thanks for any advice you can share.

Thanks for that link. Very interesting. Unfortunately, not only does it not list 450 BM, but I read this little blurb above the table. Bummer. Gas-operated semi-automatic actions reduce apparent recoil by spreading it over a longer period of time. These sorts of things cannot be accounted for in a recoil table.

There are a few videos on YT which also do recoil comparisons I did find several, but none specifically comparing 450 BM against 300/7mm magnum.

You might take a look at ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle to compare. Should be close.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

Recoil calculator might help you there. Most are not setup for Semi Autos but the AR gas tax it should be a little less than what it will show. https://jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmrecoil-5.1.cgi is a pretty handy one. Just need to know weight of bullet in grains, bullet velocity, charge weight of powder in grains and weight of rifle in pounds. If you are not reloading you can go to reloading data online at Hornady reloading data center and look at that data for velocity and charge weight and for erroring on side of caution use the highest powder and velocity listed for that weight bullet.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

Good info, much appreciated. I have found some videos of people running ATN thermal on 450 BM rigs and if the ATN can take it, the IRay certainly should.
