A friend posted a pic of some tamales they were having for a Christmas meal. Somebody responded by asking where the ketchup was. I think they were serious. Who eats a tamale with ketchup? How awful…
As for us, we usually eat tamales with chili (and beans, so flame away). And I just ate one that was unaccompanied with chili or salsa. Yum.
But ketchup?
And you eat tamales how?

If they are good I can eat a dozen with nothing else. Average ones I like some spicy queso and chips. Beer is a big plus also.

I just eat them with salsa or hot sauce. And most importantly ensure I have access to el baño.

I don't like chili/cheese and all that stuff on mine. Like mine plain, or with a good spicy salsa or hot sauce to dip them in. Yes, I know quite a few gringos who eat theirs with ketchup. I've worked with a bunch of guys from Mississippi and Abalama and those boys literally put ketchup on everything they eat, even a good steak.

Tamales are good anyway they are served. Even though I would prefer no ketchup I would not complain.
Used to a small cafe near the auction barn in San Angelo, when I was little my grandpa would take me to the auctions and lunch was a stop at that cafe. The chili was my favorite, but sometimes grandpa would get the me tamales covered in chili. The old brick style chili that used o be sold in grocery stores. I have not seen the brick chili in years.

HEB has some pretty good brick chili when you can find it. When I catch it in stock I get a couple of them to freeze for later.

Me too, although we did have some last night with Wolf brand chili, cheese, onions and some sour cream on top.

I like homemade tamales only. This is my favorite way to eat them. Chili, cheese and chopped onions. I will also eat them plain out of the wrapper. I get them a few hours after the are steamed, wrapped in foil and put in an ice chest. Can`t get fresher than that.

That sure does look good! My stomach started growling…
Just for info sake, we get our tamales from the Balderas Tamale Factory on Jones Road in north Houston. We get some spicy and some not. Call ahead if you have a big order.

Tamales with a little tiger sauce on them is my favorite.

Just like eating ribs or a steak, when it comes to tamales if they are done right I don't need anything to make them taste better. If I ask for something to put on them, you now know why.

Tamales are like oysters. By themselves they suck so you have to put stuff on them to make them palatable.
