I use cash for tips only instead of my debit card. I used to do that, figured reporting was their responsibility. I found that they pay taxes on the number of tickets, not money collected. If you don't tip, they still pay taxes on the bill.

I was a famous bartender in college…
Your servers don’t pay taxes on your check, they pay into a generic fund (called tip share in my day) which is generally 3% of their sales. That fund is then divided up at the end of a shift with bartenders who make drinks for the wait staff, busboys, host/hostess, etc.
If they get stiffed on a tab, it costs them to have waited on table given the tip-share req’t. Tip well for great service!

That asking for a tip when they are handing me a cup and calling my number out deal is annoying. Seems like every place does it. But the carhops at sonic do not have an option for cc tip.

How about just raising the cost of food 15% and not pay tips. I don’t mind tipping someone that goes beyond the expected but tips are now an expectation. It has become worthless in incentivizing someone to do a better job.

It has become worthless in incentivizing someone to do a better job. That makes zero cents, now your saying even the turd heads get a 15% tip, I don’t think so. If you ask me for a tip or expect it your not getting a penny, call me old fashioned but I’ll tip damn good if you deserve it and don’t ask for one. The jerks that simply keep your change like I owe it to them are the ones that tick me off. I went the other day to pick up a to go order and the girl tried to keep $11 on a $9 sandwich, uhhh hell no.

Picked up Domino’s the other night. Placed the order online, drove to pick it up, went inside and when I paid, it gave me an option to tip. I didn’t tip and felt no compelling reason why I should.

Fil was gonna tip 15 bucks on an $80 check the other day. As he walked off I put another 15 on the table. It was Christmas eve and he did a great job.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

It has become worthless in incentivizing someone to do a better job. That’s only because people have become scared to not tip. If service sucks, don’t tip. The the incentive is back. I didn’t tip the other night. Had to ask multiple times for things like a spoon and more drink. Then I didn’t get sour cream with my meal even though the menu says It comes with It. I asked for It and when she brought It she added It to my tab. Wth.

I think pooling is more of the normal routine anymore. I guess 3-5% of a $20 tip is better than 3-5% of a $10 tip. That’s why I say to just pay them competitive wages and not make patrons have to decide on a % to pay. Especially when that server doesn’t even get the full amount of that tip.
