I am needing a red lens flashlight for hog and armadillo hunting. Can anyone recommend a good one that won’t brake the bank? This is hunting around my house so don’t need an extra long battery life.

Elusive Wildlife

I have bought this company's flashlights for myself, as presents, and suggested them to others for years.

Good quality and not really expensive.

Green works great for hogs.

Here is the one I like the best.

250 model

Any experience with armadillos? Do they spook less with red or green? I have shot many on our place with a regular light but am hoping a colored light will let me get closer and do a better job with the shotgun. I have neighbors close enough that I won’t use a rifle or anything with a range of greater than 100 yds.

I’ve never heard of Elusive wildlife but they look like really high quality! Just what I was hoping for when I asked for a recommendation.

Thanks for the help.

Depends on what you buy. Not all of it is good.

I'd go with red. Do some research on the colors of the spectrum hogs can see. Also, red won't ruin your vision nearly as bad. It can take 45 minutes for your pupils to fully dilate after exposure to light, considerably less with red. When my dad would get out his telescope, he'd use a cheap flashlight with at least one weak battery and the lens was colored red with a Sharpie. A light like this may keep you from tripping over a stump but if the light is to be used for spotting the hogs, good luck.

Pupils 'can' dilate again fairly quickly (depending upon circumstance) but the reproduction of Rhodopsin is what can take up to an hour or more. And you are correct, exposure to red light (at modest levels) is much more forgiving in maintaining low light vision than green or white light.

Green is also in the spectrum of colors that Hogs can see. How/if a hog reacts to any light is another matter and depends on many things. But Red is always my first choice for a variety of reasons.

I bought this kit and it’s nice to have the interchangeable red/green filters.

Red vs Green is like Chevy vs Ford…

Either will work, just turn it on and lower it down vs point at them and turn on.

Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and go here. Same lights as these companies get 200 bucks for.

Try an Ultrafire XP-E2 Green light on Amazon. $28
Don't use their batteries though.
Buy some real Panasonic NCR18650B Batteries and a charger.
