As I have admitted in other posts , I am not educated in the long range tactical scope market. Here’s the goal for the new scope - sit atop my new 6mm CM and help me make accurate shots out to 400 yards.

I do not intend to become a bench shooter , realistically this gun / scope combo will get shot 50-100 rounds a year. Probably less. I prefer a scope with “old school “ reticle such as below, but will still allow me to make adjustments based on yardage

I do not prefer a reticle like below, I want to be able to get yardage , make adjustments according to DOPE, center the crosshairs and fire

I’d love to hear your experiences / suggestions!

What bullet, Biscuit? At 400 yards and a 10 mph full value wind (cross wind) and standard velocities for a 6 cm, a 105 grain bullet will move almost 10” and a 115 grain bullet about 7.5”….possibly missing vitals. Like it or not, a MOA or mil reticle is your friend….it doesn’t have to be cluttered like the Horus (Christmas tree) reticle you posted but it should have horizontal and vertical subtensions (hash marks). Most hunters/shooters prefer to dial for distance and hold for wind as wind is likely to change.

I can’t imagine there are too many, if any, scopes with uncapped turrets that have a basic reticle like you are wanting above. Almost all I would imagine have some amount of sub-tensions.

I’ll recommend a Leupold VX3 4.5-14 with CDS (and the fire dot, if they offer it in the VX3). With the scope, you get one free turret for your caliber/bullet weight/BC/velocity/altitude. Works great, but it is for that one bullet, and I really don’t know how much of an altitude change would cause POI issues. I’ve used it at 250, 260, and 400.

I wouldn’t get one for my 223, since I shoot all sorts of bullet weights.

I think Burris offers something similar.

What it boils down to, Biscuit, is that at a certain yardage the wind makes a difference and it’s silly to try to dial for it, it it changes too much, you need to hold for it.

^^This

Which is what that G-2 reticle in choice number two is for.

I didn’t see your budget I recommend the VX-5 with the windplex https://www.leupold.com/vx-5hd-3-15x44-cds-zl2-side-focus-wind-plex-riflescope or the standard duplex if your just dead set against the windplex.

A note, if your windage shows 10” you can hold 10” on a deer sized game with a standard duplex reticle. If you don’t know what 10” looks like on an animal you can practice that. Now more wind, say 30”, is another story.

The VX-3 HD mentioned above looks like a good option and is also available either reticle.

I don't understand why people find MIL or MOA hashes on a reticle so objectionable.

Yes.

However I have made some objectionable people full believers after a day of really shooting with them. Men 35 years and older have said many times "Damn why did I avoid these type scopes? This is so much easier."

Once you are used to them you don’t even notice the hash marks when using your zero…might as well be a duplex reticle, but sure are handy when you need to hold wind.

First focal plane is a real problem for my old eyes in very low light.

For a scope that will be used primarily for hunting, I’ll be looking for second focal plane and duplex reticle.

Based on your criteria, you have described a Leupold VX5-HD, 3-15 x 44 with a CDS dial. Give Leupold good data, and it will work. I have Leupold CDS dials on three set ups. I have hunted with one of them for five years and have killed a pile of stuff with it, some of it way out there.

If you want an uncluttered reticle the TMR that leupold offers is as close to a standard duplex as one can get. And midway has the mark 4 4.5-14x still for $699

It’s a solid scope.

That said I won’t personally buy anything without some kind of graduation. I prefer the x-mas tree or the nightforce mil c retical personally.

Once you start using a ffp especially with something that is a laser like a 6 creed it’s pretty easy to smoke whatever target at any distance.

I like the Meopta optika6 glass.

I prefer a German #4 reticle but they have other options too.

Exposed turrets on this model with second focal plane and illuminated center dot …

3-18x50mm

I’d stay away from that one, it has a MIL reticle and MOA turrets.

Beyond the scope please shoot a 140 or 143 gr. Bullet with a good BC. If a long shot presents its self you'll be better off. Recoil is a non issue in a 6.5 CM.

That is a terrible bullet for his rifle.

I read that in some of the reviews, seems goofy. Why would they do that ?

Not sure but the MARK4 is discontinued and the last ones left seem to be the ones no one wants.

What is your magnification range and budget preference? Any concerns about weight?
