48 hours ago I shot a nice Boar. I managed to get him up on the ATV and out of the mountains. When I went to unload him I grabbed him by the ears to drag him off the ATV and that’s when it happened! He was heavier than I anticipated and as he came off the ATV I lost my grip and his cutter caught me on my thumb and ring finger. It cut about half way through the end of my ring finger to the point I could just about bend the tip over on its side. By the time I got back to camp there was more of my blood on the ATV than pig blood.

I got the bleeding stopped and then made the decision to drive to Walmart to get some first aid stuff and wash it out real good since our camp does not have running water. Once it was cleaned up good I super glued it back together cuz I sure as heck wasn’t doing stitches on myself. Thankfully I always keep antibiotics in my hunting pack so I’m doing that as well. I’m starting to get some feeling back in it now so hopefully it’s going to heal pretty quick.

Lesson learned here is to always stay away from the head of a pig even if it’s dead! It could have been much worse had it caught my arm or leg as he fell to the ground.[Linked Image]

Wow! Glad you're not any worse off than what the pictures show! Like you said, it could have been a lot uglier situation.

Sure glad that didn't get your leg and cut an artery. Keep an eye on your hand for any signs of infection and don't wait to seek professional help if it happens.
Dang hogs.

Man glad it was not worse. Yes keep an eye on it for a possible infection.

Nice hog, btw.

You often hear of a boars tusks being described as 'Razor Sharp' when in reality they are anything but. Not the edge anyway. The 'tip' of a cutter CAN be quite pointed and sharp if not broomed off. And it is this 'tip' that is usually responsible for the wounds inflicted (that are not the result of a 'bite' and its shearing action)

Typically the wound is more of a 'tear' like the photo above suggests. If I could choose between the two I'd rather have a clean cut than a tear any day.

Sorry to see the OP's misfortune....but generally you needn't worry too much about being around the head of dead hog. They don't have scalpels in their mouths but clearly you don't want the tip of a cutter to hit you with any force. And IF it does....CLEAN the wound well....that is your real risk (infection).

You need to get on antibiotics right now. Don't wait to see if an infection starts, go see a doc.

Started Amoxicillin within an hour of it happening. I always have some with me. If I see any signs of infection I won’t hesitate to get it looked at.

Very smart. I know it already hurts....being in the area it is and the type wound it is. You might even expect some normal temporary swelling and lymph drainage, but if you see any significant redness....don't hesitate to seek medical attention. For now you've done about all you can. A light dressing for the first 48 hrs. probably wouldn't hurt, but expect to have to soak it off in order to remove it later.

Lots of nastiness in a hogs mouth....so stay on top of it.

If it starts swelling, getting red and sore get your a#s to the Dr. ASAP. A mouth bite/cut from any animal are the worst kind. Heard a Dr. Say there are enough germs/bacteria in there just like a sewer.
Not trying to scare you just stating the facts.
Nice big hog too.

I tried the super glue on a cut finger in the Alaskan wilderness. Kept getting more tender and finally burst open with pus. I am cautious about super glue over and open wound, keep a close watch on the redness like others said.

Taking gay selfies will get you cut quick, then the pig disease sets in

Just drag them

Punctures attendant with the above....is absolute truth. OP was semi-lucky it is a laceration. If you don't have an antiseptic immediately at hand....then allowing the wound to bleed a bit (not profusely of course) can be self cleansing to a degree. I wouldn't have super glued the wound personally, but hopefully he will be fine.

A hemostatic pack would be a good thing to have in an emergency kit if far away from medical help.

Normally... a wound such as the OP's should easily be controlled with pressure and bandaging. Unless a person is on high dose blood thinners or a hemophiliac he/she can usually stem the bleeding of minor cuts.

And as my Daughter (an RN working ER, ICU and Rapid Response) says "All bleeding stops eventually". Macabre sense of humor that girl.

I’ve super glued a few cuts, that [censored] burns worse than rubbing alcohol. I learned a long time ago I wasn’t man enough to stitch myself back together, so super glue it is.

Anything up to about 175 pounds I can usually load myself by climbing up on the back rack and grabbing the rear legs then dragging him up the rear fender. Anything over 175 I have a method using ratchet straps to winch them up off the ground and then flop them over on to the rack.

This is the only pic I have of the strap method. Once the rear leg strap bottoms out I do the same thing around the neck. Once the neck strap bottoms out you can just flop them over on the rack. [Linked Image]

Good solution. Now just need to have someone make you up a leather 'Pig Muzzle'. wink

Kidding. Keep up the good work killing those hogs. Nice shot placement BTW. up

It is 1000 times easier just drag them vs load them, whether you're planning to dress out or not. Use an 8-10ft sling like this (got it on Amazon), easier attach and detach.

Geez we don't need another Sniper John infection. Should be fine though. My hog hunter buddy borrowed my mower to mow some of our feed pens down and somehow cut off the end of his finger with it... Drove 2 hours to the ER. It grew back.

******************UPDATE**************************

Had to go to the doctor this morning for some routine blood work before they would refill a prescription unrelated to this incident. I told them up front I was taking Amoxicillin (in case the blood results look off) and of course they wanted to know why. Got some funny looks as I explained to them how I got bit by a dead pig but they didnt have me sent to a mental hospital for evaluation so i guess they understood what I was trying to explain. Anyway she looked at it real close and was impressed with how well it was healing given how mangled it was less than a week ago. She told me what to watch for and said she would look at the blood work for anything suspicious and call me Monday.

Yes, if you start having an urge to wallow in mud and dry corn makes you salivate, then something is up. wink
