Surely some of you hog killers have use this bullet on hogs. Good bullet? How does it act?

IME sometimes they expand, sometimes they pencil through.

If you have not bought them yet, get the Sierra Tipped Matchkings or Hornady Amaxs instead. Much more consistent expansion.

Got a good deal on 5 boxes of the Matchkings, may turn off enough of the tip to get a .04 hollow point to make sure they open.

I have thought about getting one of those meplat uniformer tools and doing something similar. I think the inconsistent tips on most BTHPs are what make the expansion iffy.

Never used MKs, but Hornady AMAX worked just fine for me. According to Hornady, the AMAX wasn’t designed as a hunting round.

Seems like even if the bullet fragments as long as the fragments are bigger than a BB they would do plenty of damage if starting with 168 grains.

The answers could realistically be all over the spectrum depending on what barrel length and velocity guys are using.

I just killed a 200# boar with a single perfect broadside shoulder shot at 200yds with a .308 shooting 110gr Vmax. Prefect .30cal pencil hole through the shoulder, golf ball through the chest wall, absolutely a mess inside the thoracic cavity. The internet will tell you that’s a prairie dog bullet But when you slow it down to 3100fps with a 16” barrel it doesn’t blow up on the outside like it will at 3400fps.

Killed a pile with 175 SMK. Does the job. For what it’s worth, I shot one with a 150 SST (labeled as a hunting round) just a few days ago and it had the exact same performance as a SMK with same shot placement. Entry, no exit, DRT. Note- I shoot them in the head/neck. The SST actually entered behind the ear and blew up. Made a mess of the off side shoulder (cut out the backstraps and the frontside shoulder). Shade over 100 yds.

I have tried SMKs for hunting and had very inconsistent results. The tipped match kings on the other hand work quite well. My personal favorite hunting bullets are the Hornady SST and the AMAX but I do not really hunt heavy game very often and would probably use a bonded bullet for large deer up north or Elk.

I'm a fan of the 6.5's in the Hornady 123 SST. I've used them quite a lot on hogs with very good results. I even grabbed my Grendel this year and dropped my first deer with it...no problems. I load that same bullet in both Grendels and Creedmores.

Hogs aren’t that hard to kill if you hit where your aiming and you know where and how to aim it. Anything that is accurate will do the jog save for your Daisy Red Rider. Now in a shooting gallery situation, I would think the Matchkings would be good choice and do a good job.

It’s just a wild pig, really doesn’t matter to me. If you hit them in the right place they will die.

My .308 only accurately shoots the 168 SMK. Pencils through deer. Will drop a hog with a head shot.

But the rounds disintegrate on large hogs. If you don't hit the brain, shoulder or spine, you'll be chasing the hog or wondering if you even hit it.

This is a good point. I myself had Hornady Match bthp’s fly apart mid flight on me twice. Call their tech support and they told me it gets reported all the time. Thus the reason for my tag line.

You watching me? Seems my AMAX 168 are doing the same. Know I have the shot but they run off. Last was 2 weeks ago thought I busted my drought. Heard some crashing in the trees but no DRT. Not the first time either.

its just a big soft point. a 150grn or better soft point out of just about anything should be gloriously fine with reasonably good shot placement. shoulder/head....no problems.
