Can you tell me why in the year 2021 we are not able to tag a deer electronically; if we want to? They already have our information. It would be much easier, there wouldn’t be these crap tickets for not signing your tag, not “cutting” out the dates, not attaching the tag properly, tearing up the tag, losing the tag, bla, bla. You can get and send a million things on a phone today, but we can’t figure a way to tag a deer?

Well I heard it from a very reliable source that electronic tagging may not only be in our very near future but might also become the standard practice. wink

For technology challenged people like me I don’t like it one bit. I wouldn’t mind it being an option, but it sounds like it might end up being the ONLY option.

technology designed to simplify things sure has created a lot of complications for me. Some good things no doubt, but some things hard to fathom.

Btw, very few get to hunt more than me.

There are places I hunt that a phone signal is non-existent.

There are still a few troglodytes that only have a flip phone and don't own a computer. bolt

What ranchman said. The lease I was on in Cass county had no service for AT&T, where I hunt now it is spotty at best.

Already too much “technology” in hunting as it is. Just like when they stopped printing the pamphlet. K.I.S.S. - keep it simple stupid.

I will end up tagging at least 8 animals this season. Really not that difficult the way it is now.

+1
The land owner wants a cellphone picture of every deer I harvest for record keeping, sometimes I can’t do it until I am headed back home and get a signal.

I think Louisiana already offers the option to electronically tag deer and turkey, they still accept traditional paper tagging for those in “the sticks” or refuse to upgrade that Nokia flip phone lol

Certainly it should be an option, for those remote areas. But, I register my car by phone, get medical, finance a home, buy guns, etc, when it’s freezing cold, raining, blowing wind a hundred miles an hour, I’d rather sit in my car and do it in a couple of minutes, send it and be done.

It only takes me about a minute to fill out the tag, enter info on the back of license and tape it to the animal. The license was signed when I bought it. Pretty simple and I have never lost one or forgot to tag one or forgot to fill it out or forgot to cut out the dates in over 50 yrs of hunting...that is on well over 1000 animals to date. MLD takes a bit longer but still easy to do. I can't even remember the count on those animals I filled out MLD or ADCP tags on for other hunters. The state already alienated a small group of aging hunters when they went to online only apps for WMA draw hunts. The day is coming when it will be electronic only. It will be just another account to have your info and data hacked.

So I’m guessing your “option” would be no. Source from state told me they make tons of money from one of those items not being properly completed. And I would bet we’ve lost more hunters, who got a ticket, on their first hunting experience, than to technology.

Oklahoma has had e-check for several years now. Some of the places I hunt there do not have cell phone coverage, so I put my license number on the animal until I get to an area with reception or Wi-Fi. Have 24 hours to check it in, and haven’t had any issues doing so. I’m not checking dozens of animals yearly like some folks, so take that into consideration.

It would be no for me due to lack of phone signal at one MLD ranch or even on my personal ranch. To fill out the MLD log and then to enter every deer killed that morning or evening would be a royal PITA. Then having to find a place to get phone signal on top of that would be an issue. I could see many errors and mistakes made with that scenario. You are thinking about tagging one animal every so often and not thinking about those who may tag 1-15 per hunt in a morning and/or evening. The state makes money from those who can not read and understand the regulations. Plain and simple. Read and follow the regulations and there would not be near the amount of money made by the state on those. It is not the states fault for issuing a citation to someone who can not follow instructions. The state provide them with the information but can not make the hunter read them. Most of them have the phone app and still don't read the regulations. That problem is solely on the hunter/license holder.

Whatever happened to reading and following directions?

Like STX stated, it doesn't take very long and I have never had a problem with a Game Warden concerning they way a tag or license was filled out and I have killed hundreds of animals. texas

I use it in NM and Oklahoma. It uploads once you get service, but in meantime it’s time stamped and saved in your phone,

Currently Texas has a harvest app where you record harvest data including photos of teeth and spread.

Long story short it’s coming. It’s a better data collection tool. Also if they require pictures most outlaws will for get to turn off GPS info on photos

The guy at the local oil change place inputs about 50 cars a day with All the data to go with it. I don’t know how that compares to 15 deer and as to Bubba’s vast knowledge of the complexities of a computer; but somehow he does it after being on the job an hour. And he can do that while ordering groceries for delivery and a cheeseburger from whataburger on his app. But he has a signal.

I uploaded my pecos mule deer to harvest app both years. It's specifically asks for pictures with spread reference. My guess is the data will be used to quantify if spread restrictions are applicable.

Don't want to feel like I am the guy working at the local oil change place.

I believe I read (maybe in the Farm Bureau newsletter?) that TPWD is doing a pilot program next year for electronic tagging.

I would like to see an electronic option just to see for myself if it's better or worse than the current way. I'm lucky enough to have two phones (one personal and one work), with one being AT&T and the other Verizon. So far, I've been covered everywhere I've been with one or the other. The place I hunt has excellent reception for the Verizon phone and complete garbage for AT&T.
It all depends on how they do it, but I would think there are enough other states using electronic methods that Texas should have enough information available to get it right.

The dipturds need to keep up with the times, when Oklahoma’s beating Texas that’s a damn shame. All we’re up to date on is filling the state with Blue Hairs and Democrats as well as chicks with D’s hammer
