Took a couple days and a lot of walking on public, but finally found a section of the creek holding some birds. Probably could’ve ended up with more had I not started finding them an hour before shooting time was up.

Was expecting to just find wood ducks, but stoked to down a green-head as my first!!

Congrats on the three curl. First duck I shot was a greenhead. Since then they've been far between.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

The number of curls don't really mean much. Most drake mallards have 2 curls, front and back, 2 feathers each curl. When you get more than 2 curls is when the feathers come apart. Danny's last pic shows it, the back curl came apart. When front and back curls come apart, you have 4 curls.

Followed up my first bird yesterday with my first limit today, jumping birds while floating downstream in my kayak. Added Woodies and a Gadwall to my species list 👍🏽

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was illegal to shoot while floating (in, or from, a moving vessel) on public waters. I thought you have to be tied up or anchored, to something when shooting.

I think you’re wrong. “ Hunting is permitted in the open or from a blind or other type of concealment or from floating craft or motor boat provided that all motion resulting from sail or motor has ceased. Sails must be furled and motor turned off before shooting starts.”

Floating downstream isn’t sail or motor motion.

You found a gem that I definitely haven't before. I have been wanting to find a place to do a float hunt. That is awesome.

Looks like an awesome place.

Lets see a picture of your floating setup, kayak, canoe, what are you using?

Congrats!, hell of a first bird!.

Shooting while floating is fine, it’s a matter of where your steel shot falls at that could make illegal.

Welcome to duck hunting! More misinformation than CNN!

Don’t have a picture at the moment, but nothing fancy. A 10’ lifetime tamarack kayak from Walmart, threw a black milk crate on the back to hold water/ammo and a rope to get up and down the shallow spots.
Just keeping the gun set flat on the kayak and slowly easing around the bends in the creek, focusing on the downed trees for woodies and catch a stray group of other ducks loafing here and there.

Congrats on the Mallard Drake. Have shot hundreds of ducks but never a Mallard Drake.
