Everyone talks about the age of bucks but how do you age a doe before pulling the trigger? Thanks Daniel

Very similar to how you age bucks. Knees, droop in neck/back, belly line, saggy skin on face & neck, size of head, faded/grizzled hair color on the eyes/ears.

I wait until a few are out and shoot the biggest one, also if one is looking directly at the blind and snorting, that one gets shot too.

You can’t beat this wisdom, if one is looking at me or acting sketchy those get brained first.

the same as bucks, body size/features. the oldest doe on the scene will usually act the most dominant. We don't scrutinize our does too hard on age....try not to shoot real young ones...so looking for something that is at least adult size. Most of ours end up probably being 2.5-4.5.

What others have said, east to tell them apart if you keep it as simple as a doe fawn (0.5yrs), a yearling doe (1.5yrs), and a mature doe (2.5+yrs)

Shoot the ones that are smarter than the others

I confess to struggling ageing does. My preference is to wait until there's a few of them in together so I can take a look and compare. I do think the "roman nose" gets very pronounced on older does over time, but it's tough for me to tell the difference between 2.5 and 4.5 yr old does.

Always helps to have more than 2 or 3 to look at before pulling the trigger. I look for the one's with the largest body, acts dominant, head that looks long and narrow like a glass coke bottle, eye seem smaller compared to the rest of the head when older in contrast to how large a fawns eyes look in relation to its head. Always shoot the BI$%H that is staring at the stand or stomping.

Depends on the management plan and goals. Don't like the way the bucks and deer look in general then does without fawns and cull bucks if I have th tage. Removing deer to get number in line....then does with fawns first. I shoot for an average age of does harvested to be under 3.

I try to avoid shooting does that look real old. I shoot does for meat and have shot older ones that were a little tough. I age does by the face, size, and color of the coat. Older does are normally darker and grayish versus younger ones that are brown. I label my meat so that I can tell which deer I am eating. We also pull all jaw bones. Pic is from the end of November. Second pic is from 2020 and that doe was a little tough. [Linked Image]

Not sure how old she was but i'd bet 10 or more. She wasnt tuff at all.

From reading and weighing our deer seems like the heaviest age class of does is about 4 years old, so if you have a bunch of them your biggest ones will be around there. That said I dont much care other than we try to shoot grown deer and not fawns. I love to take the opportunity to shoot a deer by itself so the last one there or the only one there is in danger and Im a fan of shooting the snorters/blind watchers etc. as well.

As long as it's a doe, I don't mind shooting a fawn in the least. Super tender and yummy, and that meat almost teases right off the bone. food

Why is it that a buck generally turns tail and runs, but yeah the does just get all bitchy and snort and wake up the whole woods? Yeah, I agree shoot that one.

Then don't shoot a fawn, pretty simple. And as far as it being "sick," well, opinions vary. And fawn harvest does have a place in a comprehensive management plan. But I'm not talking about shooting a fawn in spots with milk still dribbling down their mouth, either. However, a six-month old doe that's about to breed anyway is fair game. And I'll sleep like a baby too. sleep2

YMMV. up

I have and I love veal. You're talking about a yearling doe. When you used the word fawn, I associate that with deer with spots etc like you mentioned. That is what caused my reaction.

Veal is 16 to 18 months old, and raised in much more cruel circumstances. You have no argument.
