you want to get you a soil test

from there spread fert and lime (lime is very important if needed on an acidic east Texas soil

then get any weeds under control and go from there

Soil test first. If you have pine trees near the plot, expect that your going to need to add lime.

Be careful of cheap mixes, a lot of them have fillers like high % of rye grass. Rye grass grows fast and looks good, but rarely attracts deers. Before you buy, look at the ingredient label (usually on back, at the bottom) and see what % of the seeds are.

X2 and might be able to plant a little earlier. Depends on the rest of our winter and your location. Plant as thick as your pocket book will allow. Lime and fertilize .
