The TPWD often references the different geographic regions of Texas when providing information to hunters and others who enjoy the outdoors. Here's a good map that identifies them for those who may not be familiar with the designations.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Thanks Dan. Some give you a hard time, but it rarely hurts to give out some good basic info.

And lots of overlap from one region to the next. It's not cut and dry. Pines in the oaks, oaks in the prairies...
One shot is all it should take.

As much as you like weed? Best thing is a map showing where to get great weed.

Yes, Bastrop and Fayette counties to name a couple.

Really interesting how the blackland straddles post oak and how the rolling plains encircles some edwards plateau and some high plains. I can certainly identify the regions generally, but I wonder how they work out the precise borders? Soil? Fauna? Geological features? It is interesting when you're right in those transition zones and can really see/feel both.

I didn’t realize the blackland went that far south, if you’ve never been stuck in blackland then you’ve never truly been stuck

We have land with both and red clay is child’s play LOL, get ahold of some freshly plowed black with corn stubble after a soaking inch of rain. You will be praying for some slick red clay that stuff will gum up in your fender wells locking down the tires from turning. I can’t count how many times we had to leave trucks and equipment stuck in a field for weeks at a time. It makes for some good crops but anything other then that it’s worthless.

I can’t count how many times we had to leave trucks and equipment stuck in a field for weeks at a time. It makes for some good crops but anything other then that it’s worthless. Clay (red iron ore dirt) will do the same thing....it is anything but slick. It will fill up tire treads (ANY) in nothing flat and just keep building up until your wheel well, rims and everything are packed. Black dirt isn't the only thing that does that. I turned around here after going only about 50' on a hard ranch road after a slight rain. Didn't even get to the good stuff yet. I know better. I have lockers front and rear and a winch...but it just isn't worth it. I've been in some black gumbo East of Austin (Hutto/Taylor farmland) that had soil with no bottom in it when really wet and sticky (with chopped maize stems in it) before. And nothing to winch to. Not fun.
