With the leaves falling making it possible to see into the river bottom thickets I went for an afternoon hog hunt. Sneaking along usually looking at the opposite side of the creek, hoping to scare a hog out of it's bed and get a shot off before they disapper again. It is a slow stalk and very fast action, you have to be quick and it is a great challenge. I was getting frustrated because I had a couple good ones as close as 20 feet get away without a shot being fired. You really have to be on your toes. I finally caught one big boy busting out but he ran to the top of the ridge and stopped,a quick shot before he took off again. [Linked Image]

I really had no idea where I hit him because of shooting through bramble and bushes(which is why I switched to a 458 Socom for this type of hunting). At the shot he blasted off slightly downhill and crashed about 60 yds from where he was. In the summer you can't make these shots and recovery is impossible but I was able to see where he went down. So down the steep embankment, cross the creek and back up the other side and it was still kind of hard to find him. Probably 180# and fat so I snagged the backstraps and went looking for more before dark but that was all I saw the rest of the evening.

Just like Jesus, sometimes you gotta kill some hogs.

Nice and fat. Probably gobbled up a lot of whatever mast crop was available.

458 SOCOM has been my choice too for the last 12 years. up

Allows me to shoot hogs of any size at any angle and put them down.

Yeah, I know shot placement is important, but thumping them with something like a 458 SOCOM can do a lot to make up for less than optimal placement.

Nice going, that was indeed a fat hog.

1.
2.
