Have driven past this guys signage on I-20 for mebbe 40 years but had a little time yesterday to go look for some ammo or bullets. Walked in and was very surprised at how much ammo and reloading supplies were there. Got waited on by pleasant staff, who showed me what I was looking for on their shelves...didn't have the powder I wanted .... but I walked out with a 100ct box of Sierra # 1840 270 150gr Sptz'er BT's for $39.55 + TTL. Given this first experience and my frequent trips to Forney or Dallas chasing antique furniture within 10 minutes of the store ....I'll be back for sure.

Oh and when I asked if they did Consignments, thinking mebbe I can finally find someplace to sell the newish & unused Perazzi O/U gun stock I scored couple months ago out of a North Dallas Estate Auction, I was told that Wiley's doesn't have that kind of high end client base, and I'd be better served by a shop in Lindale called Guns & Guitars. We are already looking at a Lindale Auction House auction next week we need to go up there Preview that we've bought from in the past...dang nice of the guys at Wiley's for the referral.

I have stopped there a few times in years past. The last time I stopped in an older guy had some ammo he ordered through them. I wound up loading a few cases of ammo in his truck for him as I guess those young guys that were working there were too busy talking among themselves to show me a rifle or carryout his ammo. Prior to that it was a nice stop along the drive, haven't stopped i there since. That was 5 years or more ago.

The place has changed for the better in the last 5 years for sure. I’m local and they’ve always had a good selection but service had gotten to where I didn’t go there. I can now say I’m happy to go there and get good service as well as a friendly atmosphere.

Apparently the old guy at Wiley's is gone, mebbe has passed dunno didn't ask, as both of the young guy's who waited on me said the owner now is an older lady, who also was helping a customer look at something a couple aisles away. There were half dozen cars & P'up's parked outside.

I did not get a chance to go look at the range, or ask about range fee's or back stop distances. The private range I use is in Leon County, off Hwy 79 a little south of Oakwood and owned by a very old friend from back when I repped for Schoellkopf for 7 years and later repped for Stoeger Industries for 6 years. The max distance back stop is 200 yards, which is ok no more than I shoot anymore...but farther would be good too.

The range fees are $5/person plus $5/gun. No time limit. Cheap in my book. The range itself is better than some and worse than others. 25/50/75/100 yards.

The old man did pass on but he hadn’t actually ran it in years. It was ran by one of his sons who has also recently passed. He was an angry person and rude to customers. Mary, the original Wylie wife, is still the owner to my knowledge. The stores daily operations are handled by the 3rd generation and they are in my opinion doing a good job.

It was hard to shop there with the prior management. Almost as if you were invisible. I've bought a few rifles there but what a pain to get help.

edit, Sabine Gun Sales 4 miles north on TX19 from US80 was much friendlier.

That would be Gary Fancher. He was one of my high school teachers in the 80s. Really friendly guy and will get you the best price if you don’t mind waiting a week or two.

Wiley's is about as local to me as I can get, and I hadn't dealt with them for years due to reasons cited above. Went in this year to order a rifle, and aside from them trying to convince me to buy buy a rifle they had in stock (different caliber) instead of the one I actually wanted, the experience was much more pleasant this time. Never used their range though. Might have to give it a try at some point.

Tolerance is the virtue of a man without conviction.

The end of the world began the day it was created, and life is a sexually transmitted terminal disease.

I've bought several from Gary since. Limited hours but you will save some money. He even gave me some powder one day when I was buying stuff. Super guy to deal with.

Wiley's is still at it, but I think the Sabine shop is shut down.

Next round trip to the MetroMess I'll stay on Hwy 80 and see if the Sabine Gun shop is still there... but I do remember seeing a sign on Hwy 19, north of Hwy 80 & the river during the couple dozen round trips back & forth from the Texoma house to Palestine. We used to fish & duck hunt for 30-40 years on the tiny lake north of Hwy 80 and about 4-5 miles west of 19. Jimmy Smith, whose family owned Smitty's Spt Goods on Jefferson in Oak Cliff lives some where close around there. Last I heard Jimmy was still guiding on Takwakoni.

I have visited with Jimmy at Tawakoni a few times, he is quite the character.
