Wow, no love for the Savage 99. It's still my favorite with the BLR my second choice. I'm suffering from sticker shock though, a box of .300 Sav. cartridges is up to $57.99 now.

.357mag, and revolver(s) to go with it.

Couple years ago an old friend with a history of close to a dozen Africa trips under his belt had scheduled a trip to Africa for various antelope heads, including his wife and a neighbor for a party of 3 hunters. His wife fell from the garage overhead storage area and got hurt big time . He had not gotten the paperwork for his rifle completed, but his wife's BLR 7/08 paperwork arrived about the time she fell...so he took her rifle instead of his and they nixed the Buff Hunt part of the trip. Said the 7-08 held up without a hitch and he & the neighbor had a very successful trip taking the max # of heads each without a hitch.
I guess you could do worse but someday I've got to finally pick up a 7-08...and mebbe make the early '80s 1st run M70 7x57 Fwt a permanent wall hanger. Ron

I have a 308 Win BLR. I originally chose it due to ammunition availability. That was before I started reloading.
Need a straight-walled cartridge rifle. Will almost certainly be another lever action.
My botnet is bigger than yours.

I have had a .307 Win 94 for many years, which I chose since it would reach out to 200 yards and I was led to believe it would do that accurately. It took a lot of reloading with a bunch of different powders and bullets to make it a reasonable choice at 200 yards. But I recently shot a savage 99 in .308, and the .308 will do better at distance. For a lever gun, it would do 250 yards with a 3-4" group, which is generally unheard of from my experience for a lever gun. Not sure if all 99s in .308 will do that, but that gun would. Wish I had it, but then, I am glad a friend has that gun.

I have a couple. One is a pre 64 in 30 30. I killed a running Arizona mule deer with it in 1966. It’s taken a lot of Texas deer off my Montague County land.
Then I bought an old one that has no model number in 38 40 at a hardware store South of Brownwood. The guy threw in a box of old ammo. I killed a buck with it and retired it.
I’ve had both about 50 years.

.45-70, or a close second .444 Marlin.
The Savage 99s and Browning BLRs are neat rifles with close to bolt action rifle accuracy, but personally I like the Marlin 1895s and Winchester/Browning 1886s better.

I guess the one I already have, a Big Bore 94 in .375 Winchester. I agree! I have the Marlin 375 and I love the caliber. You almost have to be a reloader now to use it but I have plenty of brass and cases. Buffalo Bore sells 375 Win and also says their 38-55 is designed to work in all 375 Win rifles. Paco Kelly wrote some wonderful things about hunting with the 375 Winchester. Joe

I'd have to go with the 35 Remington, which I have. My ol man bought it in 1980 and passed it on to me when I was 12. It's put quite a few number of timber beef to rest. It's a JM stamped Marlin 336 carbine. Great deer rifle. The caliber is great as well. I was tempted by Henry's offering as of late but shifted gears a bit.

My dad has a BLR in 243 that is a handy little rifle . I killed my first deer with it about 35 years ago. I have a Winchester model 88 in 308 which is a good one as well I don’t carry much anymore.

I have three, a .Winchester 255 22 mag, A pre 60 Model 94 in 30-30 and a Winchester Model 88 in .284 that I am storing for my brother.
The model 94 is all I ever want in a lever action. It's taken it's share of Bear, Moose and Deer. The ammo is easy to find and it has stood the test of time. What's not to like?
The 284 is nice but ammo is very hard to find. Even brass is next to impossible to find. So it sits gathering dust.
I have no need for a big bore anything. Grizzly are protected and everything else is well within the capabilities of the 30-30. I do have a 30-06 for those longer shots. But they are few. This is forest country. Only the farmland offers longer shots and with a little patience stalking will close the distance to where the 30-30 will do.
Do for yourself as much as you can, eat what nature provides as much as you can. This is the key to sleeping well and living long.

.30-30 is not easy to find down here right now for others that cannot reload. Should be the most common rifle ammo available but alas...
Pass the gravy.

My favorite is a plain Jane pre-64 Winchester carbine in .30-30, but I also love my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. The .35 has noticeably more punch.

Folks have told me I need to try a .35, but I'm getting too old to start something new. I need to actually pare down the arsenal, but the kids only have so much space to store firearms.
