Hey, I live in an area east of San Antonio that doesn't get a lot of javelinas. People I know have seen them "passing through" here and there. My property has a lot of hogs, no deer, and some elusive turkeys so I typically just click through the game camera photos that I know are pigs without paying attention to the detail so it is possible that there has been javelina on my property before without me knowing. This picture is from a while ago, I just happened to look at it in while looking at the pictures I have saved to my computer. I know some of the animals in this picture are 100% pigs but the one in the middle has looks an awful lot like a javelina to me. Do javelina and hogs ever interbreed or group up?

Nope, all pigs. Javalina and hogs can't interbreed. They are different species.

All those are feral hogs; the two breeds don't get together and the feral hogs would either turn them off or knock them down and eat them!!

I know it's a stupid question but that pig just looks a lot like a javelina to me with that short snout and the coarse hide that sticks up like a porcupine. Thanks guys.

TheHeadTurkey, at first blush, I can see what you are seeing on the basic head shape and even somewhat on the body shape, but those are just some younger hogs, as noted. They are also missing their collars. As for the interbreeding, the reason why they don't is that they are NOT even remotely closely related. They aren't the same genus and aren't even in the same family. Their similarities are due to convergent evolution, similar traits developing separately.

All pigs. I shot a Javelina once. Worst mistake I ever made was trying to butcher it. The stinch reminded me of a homeless person who hasn't bathed in a few months mixed with horse.

It’s a good thing Javelina and pigs can’t cross. Can you imagine a 300 pound boar with the attitude of a 35 pound Javelina?

No, these are feral hogs.
