We've been seeing some decent 8s/10s on our lease this season, but not a ton of big bodied, mature deer that we'd feel comfortable shooting. I think dang near everybody has passed on at least an 8 or 10 (if not both) already.

BUT this past weekend two doe came hauling in from the fence line of the property, not where we typically see deer come out from. I figured something had to be chasing them. Most mature body and size I'd seen all season. Ended up being a late night so I didn't get to score him before dropping him in the overnight cooler.

Thoughts? Loses some points in width, but has some good length I suppose. Will update once I hear back from the taxidermist!

Last thing I'll say is that I found this lease through THF and the crew has far surpassed expectations! We have a strong management minded group and to that end, it's an incredible feeling when you open the cooler to drop your deer at the processor and it's the biggest one in there. Hope that gives any of y'all searching some hope!

Congratulations. Im glad youre happy with the new lease.
Im going to seriously suggest that you remember how happy you are with the deer right now, regardless what he ends up scoring. I enjoy everything about scoring deer as much and more than most anyone, but its easy for people to get too hung up on it. I score deer for guys all the time and they are ecstatic about the deer but it usually scores less than they expect and the change in their mood is not fun to see. I always warn them about it before I score. There was a guy that scored a ton of deer back in the 80s/90s for a big buck contest in South Texas that was quoted as saying something like "remember its the same deer after you get the score as the one you were so excited about before you got the score".
Scoring is a great way to measure the success of a management program and to be able to communicate to others what type of deer it is. For most, if you walk up to a dead deer and you are happy, then you should stay happy regardless of score.

I've never had the luck to shoot an 8 point so I'm thrilled, regardless of that score. Everybody on the lease wants to know so I'm more curious to provide the data for everyone else. Hope your season is off to a good start as well sir!

Great deer and it sounds like you guys are having a blast, Mr Freerange speaks the truth I wish I’d never measured a deer in my entire life and I could go back to hunting the way I did as a kid. It sure doesn’t seem to be as fun as it use to be and I think for me it’s all about having to try for something X number of inches to beat this or that record. Enjoy the hunting, keep smiling and have fun as it was meant to be and never pick up a measuring device

Thanks freerange! In the end I'm not very concerned about the numbers, I do enough math Monday-Friday haha. If anything it's a data point so I can better score another on the hoof. Plus it was a great, rutting buck experience for the memory bank.
