I have a Ruger Security Six wheel gun. Yep I have read reviews "not enough gun for deer sized game" "its plenty big for deer if you stay inside 50 yards". I have some 158 grain Winchester hollow points. I have looked for the Hornady 158 grains but good luck finding them. Any thoughts on this????

I think it'll work fine as long as you can hit what you're aiming at. It'll work even better if you've got a 6-in pistol and not a four, as the six will get you quite a bit more velocity, generally speaking. If you're pistol shooting is similar to most people's, check that, if you're pistol shooting is considerably better than most people's, I think you'll be able to kill a deer about as far as you can reliably hit the kill zone without issue. For most people that's less than 25 yards, a lot less LOL. But if you can hit a heart lung area out to 50, I don't think you'll have any trouble killing the deer at that distance with the ammo you have. Good luck, and post some pictures if you kill a deer

One other thing, if you haven't killed a deer with a pistol, don't expect rifle like results. Even with a good hit there's a solid chance the deer may run aways, a lot like if they got hit with an arrow

depending on how lucky or how good your shot is

expect it to run with little to no blood trail

Is hollow point the best option?

I personally like hollow points from a 6" barrel. I used to shoot the heck out of pigs with cheap old Blazer HP's. Never shot farther than 30-35 yrds, but it'd put them down.

Inside 50 yards put it where ti belongs and I have no doubt it will die with the 158s. I like the 180s in my 357 Marlin and feel as comfortable with it out to 125 yards as I do with any other rifle on deer.

Handgun I have only killed 2 deer with a 4 inch Ruger Security 6 at between 20 and 25 yards. The 150 gr hp was under the skin on the far side and the 180gr Partition exited about same place, both deer ran about 50 to 60 yards after double lung shots.

Plenty of gun. I've mentioned before I have a ladder stand with a creek bed and tree line about 50 yards to the right. While the primary impact zone is directly out front, every now and then a nice deer will poke out of that tree line. It's a lot easier to draw from a chest holster and rest it on the rail than getting the rifle swung around. If I'm patient they'll wander to within 30 yards or so. I use 158g semi-jacketed hollow points out of an old 6" Python. Key point, if they run just sit back and have another cup of coffee to give him time to pile up. If it's a halfway decent shot he won't get far and lay down and die, but if you rush it and kick him up he could run for miles.

All of the above...your handgun will work and the Winchester 158 Grain JHPs will work.

Practice Practice Practice if you are serious about taking deer or hogs with a handgun, including practicing out to 50-75 yards if you can.

180 grain RNFP gas checked and powder coated cast over a giant pile of AA2400 or L'ilGun is the most effective.

.357 is not the best choice and it's hampered in a pistol but it can work.

The first two pigs I ever killed were shot with a Ruger Blackhawk chambered in .357 mag while still hunting. It did the job just fine. Dang, that was 40 years ago this coming Monday. Now I'm depressed.

Shot a spike buck and a hog this year with my .357 Marlin rifle, using 158 gr. hollow points. Both of them went about 40 yards, unfortunately into very thick cover. I decided I'm too close to the fence to use that rifle and round where I hunt. Too much chance of them going over the fence and the difficulties that entails.

There is a difference, quite a difference from shooting from a lever action longer barrell vs a wheel gun. I may give it a shot and I will let yall know how it went. Thanks for the input

I have shot several with a 6" Python. All Remington 125 grain jhp. Most 20-25 yards out of bow blinds, longest 60 yards. All ran 40-50 yards and dropped. Never had an exit. Most were on the opposite side just under skin.
