Went to insure a "red dirt" ranch over in Dimmit County Friday. Driving me around the property, the Ranch Boss told Listo to take me by the big buck. I asked if he had it tied up somewhere? We came up to a HF line with a tank immediately behind it and there it was, a mature giant - deader than a door nail. Buck easily on the 180's with huge mass and distinctive, but still maintaining a typical appearance. Don't knows nothing about how it died and don't care. We were never on the same side of the HF as the downed buck.

The Ranch Boss indicated he saw that buck gone, gone in the tank the week before and called his neighbor. Someone must've gotten by there, pulled the buck outta the tank and wrapped an ol' barb wire strand around the rack so the horns would still be there when the predators were finished. A good plan in theory, but look below. When we dispose of carcasses, they are sometimes completely worked over in less than three hours. After a week, this one had no signs of being picked apart or even nibbled on by anything. In addition, there wasn't much smell to it which also caught me off guard. No buzzards, no pigs, no yoyo's, no nothing. Puzzling.

Could there be any truth to less predation behind HF properties; my understanding is that lots of HF property owners will decimate yotes, hogs and other predator types before high fencing and not sure how easy it is for new ones to get in?

Looks like something began work on his tail(oppossum?). I'm surprised too, a week is a long time to go undiscovered by vultures/cara caras. Update us if/when the mystery is solved.

Pretty easy. I border high fences at both of my properties, and both of them have spots where hogs and coyotes have dug access under the fence.

Part of brothers place in HFed. Nothing gets under that fence, it is patrolled often. There are no pigs or coyotes inside for 12 years now. Some predators climb and cannot be stopped, like opossums, foxes, bobcats and coons. But these can be hunted/trapped to minimize the impact. We have had dead deer this time of year just lay there and rot, maybe the eyes and rear end eaten, but that is it. Buzzards and cara caras have gone south so there is nothing to clean up the dead.

But I would think that as far south as Dimmit County that you would still have predator birds.

Wow, at my my place in southern OK that carcass wouldnt have lasted a day or two without being picked clean by birds.

Surprised the birds didn’t clean it up. I had one young buck i pulled from my lake this year, i left it on the shore. The next week there was zero Sign of it, not even fur.
