Second split starts in two weeks. Anyone hunting it? Is it even worth it in the North and Central zones? The last dove I saw in Montgomery county was in my backyard two weeks ago. Haven't seen anything since.

There are some around the ranch here in Breckenridge but not nearly as many as past years. Need cold weather to push some in...if there's any to push in.

Don't know about the North & Central zones, but yes I'll be hunting the South zone every chance I get. Often times the second split is stupid good.

The second split is my favorite time to kill doves. I’ve done it quite a bit in Hondo/Dilley. Usually as good as the fall opener, have to worry less about bites/stings/snakes.

I've got to check with my farmer buddy to see if he's sowed his wheat yet. He usually puts it in just before Christmas with a no till drill and it's great until it gets that first rain on it. Best time to hunt is the 11:00 am - 3:00 pm period.

TPWD public hunting is very limited in the 2nd split. I wish they would work on that to open more areas that are already open in the 1st split. I get it that some farmland wouldn't work, but a lot of public areas/private land are not farms.

We have a lot of birds on our place in Southwest Texas during the winter, but they don't get up and fly dependably like they do in September/october? I don't have a good way to get onto them. Anyone else observe this?

Late season dove can be a lot like upland bird hunting. Walk and jump shoot or flush with a dog.

It always makes for a fun Christmas Eve morning hunt. Of course having birds would help...

I made a trip south recently and saw plenty from Luling to Three Rivers and then again around Alice. Good luck to those getting after them!

Thanks EEE, I'm leaning on trying the South zone WMAs around Harlingen but I'm a bit worried about security. Pretty close to the out of control border.

I do not go out on the farm without a weapon or several weapons any more. The family farm is 90 miles from the border as the crow flies and it is unbelievable what is now happening down there in our own back yard. I can assure you those doing the most damage are armed so be safe if you venture south towards the border.

Doing well down southwest of Alice hunting over a cut pea field. Scratched out 14 yesterday evening, 8 this morning with a bonus of 6 quail. All dove are full of peas. I’ve never hunted them over a pea field. Hopefully the front today won’t change it too much.

Yeah I know the exact field they were eating from! I'll bet they were thick around there. Back in the first split I talked to the farmer that was fertilizing for a few minutes and he told me they were planting peas. I got 1 dove :-( on my hunt but I had fun. The crop was completely empty on that dove.

We saw a few around doole last week. I didn’t carry dove gun so they were flying slow and close. It will be different when I go back next week
